Cousins

does anyone have a cousin with the same name or a variation of the name? has it ever caused any major confusion in life?

my brother named his little boy Harry after our grandfather and now pregnant with my first DS I wish to call him Harrison to honour my grandfather. Brother is aware that I was always going to honour our grandfather and he was of the same consensus

is there an issue or am I over thinking?

If these are two little boys who will be very close in age and who will probably see each other all the time because you socialise a lot with your brother, and you intend on shortening Harrison to Harry, I personally wouldn’t. I wouldn’t if the situation was going to be a 2yr old Harry and a 2.5 yr old Harry running around every weekend, for example. I don’t think it would be an issue as such, and I doubt it will cause confusion, it just wouldn’t be my preference.

If you live a bit further apart or the ages are further apart, or you aren’t planning on shortening, then I’d go ahead. If you’ve got a 16 yr old Harry and a 1 yr old Harrison who only see each other at Christmas, that’s a total non-issue.

I say that as someone who has only ever met one other person with the same name as me, so maybe I have a bit more bias against matching names. People with more common names might be more of the opinion of “it’s fine even if they’re close in age/will go to the same school, there’ll be plenty of Harrys at school, friends can have the same name anyway”. Which is a valid point.

I have a few cousins who share the same names and it wasn’t an issue. I don’t remember it ever causing any real confusion or issues. These were also cousins who spent a lot of time together.

It's absolutely fine. And until very recently was incredibly common to happen in many families.

DH has several cousins and an uncle with the same name as they were all named after his grandfather. Two use the same shortenings and if it's every confusing which one someone means they are (not exact names) "Mary's Bob" and "Sarah's Bob"

I think it's fine. Maybe you could use Sonny for short rather than Harry.

I wouldn’t give it a second thought.

I wouldn't.

Particularly as it sounds like they won't be much different in age.
There's thousands of names out there. I'd choose a different name and - if it matters to you to include the name Harrison - then use it as a middle name.

Bit daft for your parents to need to be saying "Yes, we have 2 grandsons - Harry and Harry".

My cousin was named nearly the same name as me (think Sophie and Sophia) and I was quite flattered that my aunt liked my name that much! It’s never caused any issues.
