Opinions on Sofia Arabella

I know that Sofia is stupidly popular - but I honestly think it is one of the prettiest girl names I have ever heard.

I have wrestled with choosing something less in the top 10 - like Naya, Cassia, or Adrianna - but something keeps drawing me back to Sofia.

What do we think - too popular and I should stay away under any circumstance? Or lovely name?

Sofia is nice. Arabella is not.

This.

Too many As
Maybe Sophie Arabella
Or
Sophia Annabelle
Not Sofia ( looks like sofa )

RichPetuniaAgain · 03/11/2025 05:41

It’s lovely 🌸

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 03/11/2025 05:45

I like Sofia but would chose a different middle name. Something less frilly.

dontletmedownbruce · 03/11/2025 05:46

Sounds like a character in a children’s book. Perhaps a fable about a prissy princess who has a lot of tantrums.

Scrabbler · 03/11/2025 07:30

Sofia is a lovely name. Sofia Arabella is too many As and too frilly and princess-y for my taste though. I’d go for a less frilly middle name like

sofia Annabel(le)
sofia Genevieve
sofia Juliet(te)

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 03/11/2025 08:18

They are both nice names, albeit frilly in combination - nothing wrong with that if you like it

I don't think kids (especially girls) really like having v popular names so I'd do one last comb of baby name lists to see if there's something else that can work

It's going to get spelt Sophia a lot, so unless you have a strong preference for the alternative spelling, I'd go for that (also prettier and more elegant, I think)

For alternatives, I love Cassia personally - Estella, Fernanda, Rosaria, Rosanna, Paloma, Seraphina, Flora, Zara, Octavia, Alicia, Vivia - or Arabella as a first name is nice too

TheJessops · 03/11/2025 10:23

I think Sofia Arabella sounds fantastic!

Sofia is very popular but it is a very lovely name, I really really like it, go with it if you love it. I do think the Sophia spelling is nicer though.

Middle names don't matter, after the first few weeks of introducing her people will likely never hear it again and she will only use it on very official documents - passport, driving licence. If you love Arabella just use it, it really doesn't matter how it 'goes' with the first name (having said that I do think it goes fabulously!).

zebrastripesarefun · 03/11/2025 12:13

I love Sofia Arabella. Beautiful name choices.

Mumofgirls2017 · 03/11/2025 12:47

Doesn’t flow well. Suggestions

Sofia eloise
sofia margot
sofia lily
sofia vivienne
sofia juliet
sofia isabelle
sofia clementine
sofia harriet
sofia violet
sofia penelope
sofia beatrice

Emanwenym · 03/11/2025 13:19

If you love it, @Thelightblueduck , use it. The middle name will hardly get used.
Does Sofia Surname sound good together? Do the initials look OK?

Squirrelmirrel · 03/11/2025 16:36

I prefer Sophia but it's a lovely name. It is popular though. A bit like Isabella. My son has 6 Isabella's or variants in his year and I have to admit it does spoil the name for me.
But I am a firm believer that if you love a name that much and no other name compares, you should use it!
Sofia Arabella sounds great too.

Dancingwiththedrummer · 04/11/2025 08:29

We have a Sophia. She is almost an adult now and she definitely prefers her spelling. There’s a couple of sofias in the area she knows.

things that annoy her -

  • 98% if people call her Sophie
  • people don’t say so fee a, they say s fee a or sphere (probably a Yorkshire accent thing)
  • a teacher actually called her sofa for a whole term lol

things she likes -

  • not as many people have the spelling Sophia
  • it’s girly (she’s a girly girl)
  • it goes with her middle name that ends in a Y
  • it’s classic, not trendy. Doesn’t sound common
Emanwenym · 04/11/2025 09:07

not as many people have the spelling Sophia - the stats say otherwise.
Sophia was 'soph-eye-a' until fairly recently

I think it’s a regional thing too. A lot of children from Pakistani Asian communities have the spelling Sofia. So maybe that’s why it’s more common in Yorkshire where we live and Sophia less so? I was simply giving my opinion on my daughter’s experiences on pronunciation, she prefers ‘so fee ya’ and I guess it is quite annoying when you correct people and they still get it wrong. It’s her name she can have it pronounced how she likes. Just like someone who likes it the other ways should too. Other people may have a different opinion/view/experience to her. I was just voicing hers :)

coxesorangepippin · 04/11/2025 14:42

Would people be required to say both? Or would it just be Sofia?

AutumnCosy2025 · 04/11/2025 14:48

I too prefer the Sophia spelling.

i like it, not so keen on Arabella ( unless you're going to buy her a pony) but it's harmless as a middle name.

Emanwenym · 04/11/2025 14:49

@Dancingwiththedrummer , they're Safiyah/Safiyyah here. High percentage of the local population is British Asian.
Zara/Zahra is popular too, as are vowelly names like Inaya, Amaya etc (very samey).

Calliopespa · 04/11/2025 14:54

Both really pretty, classic names with royal pedigree so you can;t really go wrong.

Together they are quite flowery.

I'm not sure that actually matters if they are first name and middle name.

I think reversing the order to Arabella Sofia (love that "f" spelling!) sounds slightly less sing-songy, but on the whole I like it.

Are you using the So-Fee-a pronunication or So-Fye-a?

ChocolateCinderToffee · 04/11/2025 22:55

I think that’s a lovely name!

It is lovely. It has grown on me a lot since I first opened this thread.

If you like Sofia for daily use, you could still consider Arabella Sofia and go by her middle name - which many people do. The only reason I say that is that I think the syllables somehow flow better that way.

One other point: both Sophia and Arabella have links to the British Royal family, and, although I like the Sofia spelling to look at, I wonder if it might be quite nice to link the two names by using George III's daughter's spelling, Sophia? Just a thought. But it is a nice - and unusual - combination of names.

NotTheSameTwentyFourHours · 04/11/2025 23:07

Too many As. Sophie Arabella is fine, or Sofia is nice (although I prefer the ph spelling) but needs a middle name which doesn't start or end in an A!

Edited

Maybe that's why I am liking the order reversed? The second name starts with an S to separate those two As.

Yes, I agree Arabella Sofia is probably better (although I think Sofia or Sophia are nicer first names than Arabella, so I'd keep Sofia and choose a different middle name). I think even reversed it's a lot of As and Arabella Sophie would be less cumbersome. Mind you how often is anyone's first and middle name spoken aloud together? It probably doesn't matter!

I'd stick with the first name that the parents like best because that's the one in daily use, rather than reversing the names for better flow I think.

RollyPollyBatFace · 04/11/2025 23:31

It’s very fussy and frilly
