Dexter - morally wrong to name your child after a fictional serial killer?

DH and I are a big fan of the Dexter books and TV series. We also love the name Dexter, and are planning to use this if we ever have DS2.

How does it stand to give your child a name that is shared with (albeit a very charming and not real) a serial killer?

Is he going to be scarred for life?

Ramone Dexter is a post-apocalyptic gun shark out of 2000AD. His partner in crime is Finnigan Sinister. DH wants boys so we can use these names.

oh I knew a Dexter. I thought the same as tortoiseshell Dex Dexter from dynasty- every time I saw him (he was 2, so not at all like Dex Dexter).

nappyaddict · 04/08/2008 00:24

He he he - I watched too much Hotel Babylon when pregnant - and so my son is Dexter after Dexter Fletcher (although think Dexter Morgan was cool too)!! He is left handed though...he now has a right handed horrible sister who should be called Sinister lol.

Zoomtothespoon · 04/06/2016 21:22

Hang on I'll just go ask my son. He's been awfully quiet since he snuck some tarpaulin up into his room an hour ago Grin

When I hear the name Dexter. It makes me think of the cheeky and cute little monkey In the movie. A night the museum

Nataleejah · 06/06/2016 07:16

Dexter's been around way before the fictional serial killer. A couple more years there will be new cult shows

P1nkP0ppy · 06/06/2016 07:24

Ex-farmer so Dexter is a cattle breed 😕

Jooni · 07/06/2016 19:41

NO! Dexter is a great name, firmly on our list too Smile

I've known a boy called Dexter who would probably be about 9 or 10 now. I've never seen that TV programme, maybe my opinion would be different if I had, but my first reaction to hearing about this Dexter was just that it sounded very American, one of those tough-guy surnamey names. But those seem to be getting more and more popular and I've now met so many young Masons, Spencers, Carsons etc that I don't think I would have any particular reaction to Dexter now.

ephemeralfairy · 14/06/2016 23:26

Dexter is an amazing name!! It is highly unlikely I will ever have dc but Dexter would be my first choice for a boy Grin
