Hello all,

Would it be strange if I called my son Zaccai if him and our family are white British? We have no other heritage at all. I love unique names, hence why I am drawn to it.

Thanks.

@TenGreatFatSquirrels , but those are mainstream name that have been in use in the UK for a long time. It's not comparing like with like.

How complicated is your sons named? Does it bother him? Does it have a shortened form? I mean if we all have names people in uk can pronounce we should all be called john, Dave, James (Richard can get trick). And all women can be called Mary, Jane and Ana ( with a single n. Two might be confusing).

Let your Son be proud of his/your heritage. Be proud that it's reflected in his name

He likes his name and so do i. The name is short and easy. Like Jan, pronouced 'Yann'. Its not this, but similar.

No one? So you wouldn't know how to spell it or pronounce Zaccai? Really? I guess you can't pronounce Tchaikovsy or Puccini. So which names can you spell or pronounce? James and Dave? I often find that with names from other languages and cultures I just have to listen or ask how the owner pronounces or spells it and then try it out. Occasionally takes a few tries. Zaccai should be that complicated

Tchaikovsky and Puccini are famous names. Zaccai isn’t. I have never met or heard of one and can only guess how it is pronounced, and if someone said it to me I certainly wouldn’t know how to spell it.

I don’t understand why some people want to give their poor children names that will require explanations every time they meet someone new, for the rest of their life.

intrepidpanda · 29/10/2025 21:06

He will jut get called Zack anyway if he is English so if you like it go for it.

Emanwenym · 29/10/2025 21:20

@NautilusLionfish , most people are familiar with the names Tchaikovsy and Puccini. Not many will be familiar with Zaccai.
Your argument doesn't hold and your tone is insulting.

@Ellycritten , Have you considered Zebedee? Zeb is cool.

Valkyrie3 · 29/10/2025 23:49

Isabella is not French. It is Italian.

TenGreatFatSquirrels · 29/10/2025 19:32

Olivia is Latin, Sophie is Greek, Isabella is French, Theodore is Greek, Noah is Hebrew, Liam is Irish… most names aren’t exactly English in origin

Did you notice I said “Obviously there are names that cross cultures”?

Anxiouswaffle · 30/10/2025 01:41

I'd not heard the name and googled and got this:
"Zaccai is a shortened form of Zechariah, which is also spelled Zachariah or Zacharias"
I'd just call him Zachariah in full then you can use the abbreviation you like but his friends and he can choose what abbreviation they like or use the full name when they want- the full name gives more options and is also much wider known (but you can still get problems- even in the spelling of Zac/Zak)

No, I have considered Zacharias so I think I am going to go for that. X

Yes, it would saddle him with a lifetime of explanations.

I think it's a nice name. I don't know what specific language or heritage this name comes from - to me it appears Biblical? The first result on a Google search is a Belgian actor called Jonathan Zaccaï.

I don't think you have to have a particular heritage to use this name. Bear in mind that society has moved on from the time when every other boy was called John or James or David. His classmates will probably have quite varied and multicultural names.

Zacharias is lovely ☺️

AlwaysGreenerGrass · 30/10/2025 17:53

Awful name imo but up to you I suppose.

Ketzele · 30/10/2025 18:53

I rather like it, but see you have decided against.

BananaPeels · 30/10/2025 18:56

Call your child what you want. If you like it then go for it. I have never heard of that name before, I expect he’ll be misnamed Zachary but ultimately it is your choice

Northbynorthbest · 30/10/2025 19:10

I'm guessing it's pronounced "zack-ah-eye"?
But I think most people will pronounce it "zacky".

Emanwenym · 30/10/2025 19:31

Zack-eye @Northbynorthbest

Realityvbelief · 02/11/2025 13:37

It's not unique. It's unusual. Unique in this context would mean only one person has the name. If a parent really wants a "unique" name for their child they should call them something like "Table" or "Postbox" or a random string of letters and symbols.

GetToHeaven · 02/11/2025 13:42

My friend has a Zachariah and they have enough trouble with people mispronouncing that, so I think people would really struggle (I don’t know how to pronounce it)

Sorry, I meant I don’t know how to pronounce the name OP is asking about. I know how to pronounce Zachariah!

Why not. It's a Hebrew / Biblical name. Plenty of names have Hebrew / Biblical origins and are in general use.

Zaccai is a more unusual one but nn Zac is pretty mainstream.

Miriam, Naomi, Sarah, Rachel, etc are all Hebrew origin and no one bats an eyelid.

David, Adam, Benjamin, Aaron, Ethan, Elijah are examples of male Hebrew names. Similarly no one bats an eyelid.
