Have the middle names Mae/May, Rose & Grace been cheapened by the double barrelling name trend?

They seem to be genuinely hated on here, I understand they have been very common middle names for the past 30 years but they are lovely imo that’s why they are so popular but I understand they aren’t everyone’s cup of tea.

i think a lot to do with the hate is because they are used in a very trendy way a lot of the time. Rose especially has become quite a cliche, like Lily-rose, Ava-rose, Isla-Rose and people on mumsnet think hyphenated names are “low class”.

Why are they so hated on here, is it because of how common they are? Too trendy? I’m genuinely curious

@luckylavender , I agree.

toonananana · 21/10/2025 11:40

They’ve replaced the old -Ann/e add on, eg. Leigh-Anne, Kerry-Ann, Cheryl-Anne, urgh. I think they sound common.

Thenamechangecometh · 21/10/2025 11:46

It's funny because they are really lovely names but it's quite rare to meet a first name Rose! (Whereas I know a lot of young Lilys)

PanderBare · 21/10/2025 11:49

@toonananana , Julie-Anne, Tracey-Anne...Suzanne, Joanne, Jo-Anne, Lesley Anne, Diane, Anne-Marie ...

Firebird83 · 21/10/2025 12:26

A lot of people are using Rae now instead of Mae.

PanderBare · 21/10/2025 12:27

@Firebird83 , it's just as bad, if not worse.

MajorMerrick · 21/10/2025 12:35

My DD has May as her middle name, she’s 20 in a few days, so a little less common in those days, but were still on the rise. Both of my DH’s grandmothers were May, so it was a nod to his family, which I thought was nice. If people want to think less of us on face value, that says more about them than us.

Bear2014 · 21/10/2025 12:37

Yes and it annoys me because my middle name is Rose, after my grandmother, and I wanted to use it for DD but didn't in the end because it's seen as so boring now.

EmotionallyWeird · 21/10/2025 12:51

I really like all three names in themselves, but using them as middle names has become a bit boring just through familiarity, in the same way that a lot of people my age had Jane or Louise as a middle name so they came to be seen as unimaginative choices. In my teens I would probably have been quite impressed to meet someone who was Nicola Rose or Sarah Grace, not yet another Nicola Jane or Sarah Louise! But wouldn't it be refreshing to hear of a little girl with one of those once-boring middle name now?

CoconutGrove · 21/10/2025 12:53

I love Rose and I love Emily Rose. I wish I'd picked it for my dd in 2004

That’s a real shame :( My daughter is the sixth middle name Rose in a line and there was no way I was not going to call her that when it comes with so much history for our family.

PanderBare · 22/10/2025 07:48

@TheBirdintheCave , give her a first name that isn't a common one. It won't be as noticeable as yet another Lily Rose or Freya Rose or something.
Middle names don't get used much unless the first name and surname are common.

I do kind of regret not using it as her middle name now. But her first name is after Rose's sister who I was also really close to and we learned our lesson with DS and used the (admittedly less generic) family middle name.

Kumquatzest · 22/10/2025 18:05

I don't think they're "cheap" but they are extremely popular, and in my view, overused. Eventually they will become a bit cliché and fall out of fashion. But if that doesn't bother you, fine. If it does, then there is a whole world of lesser-used names out there e.g. Rosalie or Rosemary instead of Rose.

Orphlids · 22/10/2025 18:43

I think they are nice names. But yes, they have become so incredibly boring. And if I’m honest, I think the thing that makes me dislike these middle names is that very often, the mothers of all the little Rosie Mays and Olivia Graces seem to think they have chosen a wildly exciting and original name for their child, and are sure to let you know exactly what it is. How do we know what all these kids’ middle names are? Because the parents are so keen to tell us and bask in the following compliments. I want to hear more Boudiccas and Andromedas.

PanderBare · 22/10/2025 18:55

And yet again you say 'Ooh what lovely names', when really thinking how predictable Lily Rose and Ellie May are.

Orphlids · 22/10/2025 18:58

Ha ha, yes! I would hate to see their crestfallen expressions if I hurt their feelings with unnecessary honesty!

MellowPinkDeer · 22/10/2025 19:00

I just think it shows a lack of imagination. There are literally thousands of awesome girls names. They are all just so ‘meh’

edited to add - hyphenated names are absolutely vile.

Her name is Marcella :) It’s quite unusual in the UK!

In some instances it probably is a lack of imagination but you can’t lump us all together.

My FIL cried when he heard that my husband and I gave our daughter his late wife’s name as one of her middle names. It really meant a lot to him as my husband’s older brother hadn’t bothered when his daughter was born. And yeah her name is what some would describe as ‘boring’ or ‘filler’ but I love it because it was hers.

PanderBare · 26/10/2025 14:07

@TheBirdintheCave , but when someone hears of yet another Something Rose/Grace/May they don't think 'probably named after a relative', they think 'meh'.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 26/10/2025 15:07

They are just so so overused they have become filler names. Once a name is so overused, you stop hearing it as anything other than 'blah' - like Jane or Louise in the 60s and 70s

The hyphen thing is a separate topic.

Of course.

In that instance you could always use three names to help it feel less filler to anyone who doesn't know the context

PanderBare · 26/10/2025 15:36

It doesn't though. The full name tends to sound a bit clumsy.
Rosie Ruth Grace Archer sounds worse than Rosie Ruth Archer or Rosie Grace Archer.
