Our name choices don’t seem very liked

DH and I have just had our twin baby girls, they are 3 weeks old and we have named them Gigi and Lola. We love their names and put a lot of time into picking them. We are a Anglo-Franco-Italian family so tried really hard to pick names that everyone would be a fan of.
Since then we’ve told family, friends etc. our babies names and got lots of “oh are the nicknames” and “oh that’s interesting”, which I guess just makes me feel really crappy. We haven’t registered the girls yet so we could change the names, but I’m not sure if I want to. Their full names are Gigi Apolline and Lola Gabrielle.

What are your thoughts?

Are you just determined to make every single name an issue?
Why don’t you give a list of names you like since you seem quite intent on making an issue with every name someone suggests?

DuchessOfNarcissex · 23/10/2025 15:26

@bobozeduck , because of the names being suggested.

I've heard of a few GiGi's in the last few years, I'm not typically a fan of going for the nickname variant as the full name but I actually find GiGi pretty cute and I say that as someone who has named my children very traditionally. Considering the current trend for Archie, Alfie, Albie, Theo I don't think GiGi or Lola would raise an eyebrow - at least the full versions of those names are pretty and people would use. Can't imagine a nursery full of Archibalds and Albert's somehow.

Only thing I feel sorry for is little Lola/Lila getting the 2nd pick name then having it changed purely to make GiGi sound better. Lola was fine! Or take time to find something else you truly love.

Is Lila pronounced like Lyla or Leela?

I would have said Jee Jee but I see it’s zhi zhi. I don’t think you are doing baby Gigi any favours at all but despite wondering about the negative reactions in real life and coming on here to ask about them, you’re determined to argue with everyone who also isn’t a fan of Gigi. You can’t complain that people are being rude about the name of a real life baby when you have asked for opinions on the baby’s name. Maybe you should consider the many negative reactions on here and in real life and actually think of a full name for Gigi so she has a nickname option and a full name option.

OP I’ve just showed my step daughter this thread, her name is Gigi, no full name, no middle name and her reply was that if you love the name ignore anyone who doesn’t love it. Clearly people don’t love the name Gigi but no one has ever said that to her and she loves her name and can’t imagine being called anything else. She also said those saying it will impede her career are ridiculous as she is out earning the majority of the Emma’s, Georgias and Lucy’s of the world!

Harvard educated judge named Gigi. One of a number of Judge Gigis. Plenty of doctors called Gigi too. I had a cousin in American call Gigi born in the 1960s. I don’t think she had a longer name, certainly not one that was ever used. Her family were very well to do. I would personally use it as an abbreviation for Genevieve or something, but it’s a lovely name on its own. My daughter has an extremely unusual name that would probably have people on MN saying she would face a lifetime of ostracisation. In real life she has had no issues with it and only gets compliments

Whose name is actually Bernadette.

As I said before to another poster:

I know, but she still uses pixie in a clinical setting so it may as well be her actual first name.

I doubt a 7 year old would have a clue what cami-knickers are.

I've just seen this thread. Please don't change their names OP. I love Gigi and Lola. Lola is a bit different compared to Lila which is more likely to get mixed up with Isla and Lyra.
Mumsnet is not the place to ask for this kind of advice. You've chosen names that suit your style, they are perfectly fine names and go great together. The lady of the night comments are weird.
