What are people's opinions on the name Edward? It's the only boys name me and DH sort of agree on but we don't feel it's the perfect one. We are worried it comes across as posh/possibly stuffy. Especially next to the more informal-sounding names that are popular at the moment

Lovely name, fits almost anywhere and that great balance of well known, easy to spell, with a couple of diminutives to pick from but not over used at the moment.

TennesseeDreams · 11/10/2025 07:25

I love the name Edward. I also love love the nns of Ed, Eddie, Ned and Teddy.

Ruralretreating · 11/10/2025 07:27

Love it! My DS is an Edward. It’s a classic name, friends and sports coaches often shorten to Ed - so if you don’t like Ed or Eddie don’t use the name. He gets called Eduardo sometimes too as we had a Spanish-speaking nanny

Anotheranonposter1 · 11/10/2025 07:29

Love it but we have an Edward so am bias! He gets Ted most of the time but we thought it was a name that could grow with him as lots of variety for nn

TennesseeDreams · 11/10/2025 07:34

If I ever had another he'd be Edward. It was on my list but we ended up naming DS after my lovely FIL. It suits him and I love it too, but Edward would be the next one. (Unlikely as I am 52). Grin

Personally I’m not a huge fan of Edward, it sounds pretty clunky to me. That’s just a preference though and it’s objectively a fine names. I know three Edwards in various baby groups near me so I wouldn’t worry about it standing out. And if he wants a less formal choice he can be Ed/Eddie/Ted/Teddy/Ned/Woody etc

peakedat40 · 11/10/2025 07:57

Edward is lovely; our dc2 would have been an Edward but turned out to be a girl Smile

CheapMustard · 11/10/2025 08:01

I love the name Edward. I know 2 little boys called Edward. One is an ‘Eddie’ the other a mix between Edward and Eddie. Both great characters and the name suits them.

whereisit1 · 11/10/2025 08:05

Lovely name and so many cute variations

JillyGiraffe · 11/10/2025 08:10

Love Edward. DS was going to be Edward nn Eddie until a family member (and the lady next to me on the ward!) used the full name Teddy.

Frikadelle · 11/10/2025 08:11

As a Frasier fan, I've always had a soft spot for an Eddie.

LivingTheDreamish · 11/10/2025 08:20

I love Edward. I think I know what you mean about being a bit stuffy, but you get around that by calling him Ted, Ned or Eddie.

Titasaducksarse · 11/10/2025 08:21

A proper strong name with the option of many variations

itsgettingweird · 11/10/2025 08:24

It’s a great name.

solid and timeless with lovely
nicknames if he wants to use them.

Eddie, Ted, Teddy are the most common ones used.

Zempy · 11/10/2025 08:25

I absolutely love it.

MrsM2025 · 11/10/2025 08:26

My imaginary DS 2 is an Ed!

ACynicalDad · 11/10/2025 08:28

I find it a bit vanilla, not offensive but not very special either. A bit dull if anything, but fine.

MinnieMountain · 11/10/2025 08:31

It’s a nice, classic name. We seriously considered it but went for Edmund in the end.

Emanwenym · 11/10/2025 08:44

It's nice but will be probably be Ed, Eddie, Ted, Teddy or Ned.
Ned is awful, Teddy is too popular.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 11/10/2025 08:48

Ignore popular names. It's lovely; if you wanted to make it less stuffy you could opt for the many nicknames already mentioned.

I know two Eds - one Edward, one Edmund.

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 11/10/2025 08:49

Love the name & also the shortened versions. My oldest teddy bear is called Edward.

Emanwenym · 11/10/2025 08:54

I don't think it sounds stuffy, unless you compare it to the 'cute' name or the ones that are occupational surnames.

muddyford · 11/10/2025 08:56

I love it. A classic strong name, a squillion miles removed from some of the 'unique' ones trotted out on here.

Moreteaandchocolate · 11/10/2025 09:37

I love it! And he can use the more modern sounding nn options if he likes - Ed, Eddie, Ted, Teddy etc

Seainasive · 11/10/2025 09:41

Mine’s an Edward called Teddy 😀
