We both love the name Trinity but DH is a little concerned that it's a 'chavvy' name. I said that I didn't think it was but that I would ask you all if you think it is or not!!

Is it??

We wouldn't be calling our child Threesome, we'd be calling it Trinity! It means Triad anyway.

If called it Anna that's the same as 'favour'; Verity is the same as saying 'Puritan Virtue'.....meanings are largely irrelevant I find!

Verity is nice. Ds's lovely cello teacher is called that. But Verity has completely different connotations than Trinity, I think.

We had loads of Nigerian kids at the dc's old school, and there were loads of kids called things like Precious, Amen, Peace, Princess. There wasn't a Trinity as it happens, but there easily could have been iyswim.

Iklboo · 04/06/2008 14:15

Depends if you're going to stand in the middle of Greggs shouting

"Trinerrrreeeeeee - ja wanna ribeenorrrr wiv yer sossidge rowul"

(tranlation for those that don't speak chav mancunian - Trinity, do you want a Ribena with your sausage roll?")

Thankyouandgoodnight · 04/06/2008 14:16

To me Verity is frilly and public school...

Not too keen. Don't know why.

Someone at work has a Trinty and a Travis . Maybe that put me off.

SixSpotBurnet · 04/06/2008 14:19

I love Verity. One of my few regrets (actually I think my only regret) about having no girls is that I didn't get to use any of my favourite girls' names, Verity being one.

dizzydixies · 04/06/2008 14:19

I meant sounding the same Trinity and Verity as similar in sounds NOT meaning

was just a suggestion

Thankyouandgoodnight · 04/06/2008 14:21

Ah I thought you meant 'of a similar ilk' rather than just sound similar. I didn't think you meant similar meanings!

In a parallel universe I have four dds called Charity, Chastity, Prudence and Hope.

AdamAnt · 04/06/2008 14:23

I'm posh and I like it

I also think it's a bit naff to be so worried about whether a name is 'chavvy'. Either you like a name, or you don't. It's a shame to pigeon-hole names into class-levels.

seeker · 04/06/2008 14:39

So it's just a collection of nice sounds? Trouble is that with "conventional" names, the meaning has sort of vanished. I forget that Grace was a virtue until after I called my dd it (!) but Trinity just means Trinity, like laptop means laptop. I don't think a name of a thing becomes the name of a person detached from teh thing until several generations have passed. Sorry, just my opinion.

frogs · 04/06/2008 14:45

SSB -- isn't there a Prue somewhere in one of the Malory Towers books? And wasn't she a bit sly and spiteful? The name always made me think of the prunes and custard we used to get for school dinners.

Nancy66 · 04/06/2008 15:11

It's very chavvy.

You've also got to remember that a lot of people won't pronounce the middle T - and "trin ah ee" sounds horrible.

muggglewump · 04/06/2008 15:18

I don't think it's chavvy since I don't know anyone with that name but I do think it's the type of name that will end up chavvy.

Pinkjenny · 04/06/2008 15:19

Not sure. I toyed with Liberty for dd, but discounted it for the same reasons. Couldn't decide whether it was on the right side of unusual.

PrimulaVeris · 04/06/2008 15:20

It's one of those where I have to pause and think, 'um, boy or girl?' ... but then I fall into the dullard baby name camp.

trinitysmum · 04/06/2008 15:21

Trinity is my dds name. We are very posh lol. We are Catholic and all our dcs have Catholic names. (lots of travellers are Catholic too btw) I haven't met another one in real life so 100% of the trinitys I know are not chavvy. I think a lot of names that end in an ee sound are quite chavvy. I think Trinity can cover the spectrum tbh.

minster · 04/06/2008 16:52

I knew a Trinity growing up (v. posh), a friend has one who is 13yo (lovely hippies) but now (here South East) it is really chavvy.

Pen74 · 04/06/2008 17:40

It's only chavvy if you are chavvy. It's posh if you are posh.

I know posh and chavvy Georges and Amelias. What does this make the names?. I even know chavvy Benedicts and Octavias. ALL names are classless now.

I love the PP that said it's naff to worry about chavviness - so true!

FWIW, I like Trinity.

Twinkie1 · 04/06/2008 17:43

God yes!

expatinscotland · 04/06/2008 17:55

If you have to ask . . .

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 04/06/2008 18:56

There are two Trinitys (or should that be Trinities) at school. Round here, it denotes offspring of evangelical Christians.

Agree that most names have lost or are losing their class connotations and it's probably vulgar to worry about their (lack of) class status. That said, I don't much like the name but would, if I had the chance, opt for Prudence, Grace, Faith, Patience, Mercy, Hope or Charity. Would be deterred from calling a daughter Chastity, partly because it might cause tittering at the christening but also because that's the same name as Cher's daughter and however much I liked the name (or Fifi Trixiebelle or Pixie or whatever) I think they're now very much 'daughter of rock star'.

But ... go for what you like and don't worry about the court of public MN opinion.
