Thomas or Tomas?

I know it's not the world's most exciting name and there are loads of Thomas's out there but it is the only boys name that both me and dh like. I like Tom and so will prob shorten it, but want him to have a longer name as well to use if he wishes.

Just want opinions on the alternative spelling. Does it look nice or is it silly to use a very common name with a less common spelling in that he will be forever explaining that it is "Tomas without an h"?

thomas

I prefer Thomas, but I am biased.

DirtySexyMummy · 03/06/2008 19:36

Thomas

And I think its a lovely name, a good strong name. It will always be popular, but never common, and won't age.

It was the main contender for DS, but I opted for the more unusual. Often wish we had gone for Thomas

nickytwotimes · 03/06/2008 19:37

Keep the 'h' or he'll spend his life telling people how to spell it,lol!

flowerybeanbag · 03/06/2008 19:39

It's a lovely name, but only use Tomas if you have family origins in a country where they usually spell it that way. Otherwise it looks like you can't spell.

It was on my list for DS but reluctantly taken off as Tom [Beanbag] sounds really rubbish as a combo.

Heated · 03/06/2008 19:46

If your roots are such that Tomas is a legitimate spelling then definitely use it, otherwise no imo.

PuppyMonkey · 03/06/2008 20:56

I have an unusually spelled first name and it is so annoying when important things (eg driving licence, passport, cheques etc) come spelled wrong... so you have to get them changed!

Thomas please...please?

Even if you DO have connections to a place where Tomas is the norm, I would argue.

daftpunk · 03/06/2008 20:58

my youngest is called tom...great name!

WigWamBam · 03/06/2008 20:59

They are two different names; isn't Tomas pronounced differently? I seem to recall it being pronounced ToMAR, like the beginning of Tomato.

castille · 03/06/2008 20:59

Thomas, definitely.

yogabird · 03/06/2008 21:01

Thomas - of course!

Thomas unless you have very strong associations with the Tomas spelling. It is always easier to go with the standard variation when it comes to spellings.

AbbeyA · 03/06/2008 22:04

Thomas

funnypeculiar · 03/06/2008 22:05

Like poth (but then I have a Thomas shortened to Thom just to really p*ss people off )

funnypeculiar · 03/06/2008 22:05
