Interested to see what you all prefer. It’s one of my favourites names at the moment. I’ve always had a long list of names I love and this has been at the top for quite a while!
(Not currently pregnant but hope to be soon ❤️)

I see a lot of names (through work databases)
I've only ever seen it spelt Freya.

Of course, that isn't to say it isn't spelt differently in different countries / languages, but if she would be growing up in the UK, I would go with the most commonly used spelling here.
Of course, if she will be growing up elsewhere, then I would take into account the most usual spelling wherever that is.

hardtocare · 01/10/2025 22:39

provided you’re cased in the uk spell it the conventional way with a Y. I’ve got an unconventional spelling and it’s a pain to have to spell my email constantly at work

Sleepeatcrochetrepeat · 01/10/2025 22:41

Agree with pp, use the spelling most usually seen where you live.
Other options will always need spelling out and it gets very, very tiresome after a while.

Thank you!

We love the Freyja spelling and assumed it would be easy enough to pronounce with it being from Norse mythology so it’s good to get opinions 😊

I think all the spellings look nice and the pronunciation is obvious from all. As someone who has to constantly spell my name, it really doesn’t bother me. So if Freyja is your favourite, use that.

SkaneTos · 02/10/2025 16:18

Great name!
I voted for Freja, because that's how you spell it in Sweden (I'm Swedish).
(We spell it "Freja", but the pronunciation is still "Freya".)

But I know the spelling "Freja" can make it difficult to pronounce in English-speaking countries.

I suppose you can't assume everyone is going to be familiar with Norse mythology (and, besides, in some English story books it gets anglicised to "Freya" anyway).
It is in the New Larousse Encyclopedia of Mythology as Freyja, at least. You could point people towards that?
On the whole, I think you've just got to decide which you prefer and accept that, if you go with one of the J versions, it may need explaining to some people, rather than relying on everyone's knowledge of Norse mythology.

ResusciAnnie · 02/10/2025 17:00

I know a Freyja. I mean, who is honestly going to struggle with that?? Most people will hear a name rather than read it. It’s fine. I like them all, I’d choose Freya, very popular at the moment! Had 2 in my class when I was a kid and everyone was alarmed as it was soooo unusual.

CeciliaMars · 02/10/2025 17:47

Freyja looks like Frey-jer to me. Don’t do this to the poor child!

Scandidandi · 02/10/2025 21:12

Freja

FettleOfKish · 02/10/2025 21:15

We had the exact same conundrum OP (until we ended up having a boy!). DH is Scandinavian so I favoured Freyja as a nod to that, until I wrote them all down myself. Freyja is clunky to write somehow with the yj combination. We’d have gone for Freya in the end I think, as I have a German friend Sonja who unfortunately more often than you’d think gets ‘Son-Jah’ in the Uk until she corrects people.

Firebird83 · 02/10/2025 21:21

I know someone who spelled it Fraya for her daughter. I like the Freja spelling.

MyOliveStork · 02/10/2025 21:22

Our family is Swedish (husbands side) we went with Freya rather than Freja so that she wouldn’t experience issues in this country with misspelling, mispronunciation etc. She already has a Danish middle name and an unusual surname so thought we’d make it easier for her!!!!

BoleynMemories13 · 02/10/2025 22:15

I taught a Freyja once, so I'm quite fond of that spelling. It didn't seem to cause her any problems. I guess people may spell her name as Freya from time to time, but everyone seemed to know how to pronounce it.

If you love Freyja, go for it.

EmotionallyWeird · 04/10/2025 22:01

I was at school with a Freyja but all forms of the name were very unusual in the UK back then (I'm in my 50s). I don't remember anybody having any trouble pronouncing it.
