Brother for Matilda

We’re really really struggling with a boys name! We loved Matilda from the start and we don’t have a boys name we’ve had the same connection to.

Middle name will be Peter for family reasons.

so far we have:
Frederick
Oscar
Douglas (Dougie / Doug)
George
Alexander
Edward (Ted / Teddy - I do not like Ed so that puts me off a bit).
Louis

Which do you prefer? (Other suggestions welcome!)

Thanks all! Some really good suggestions. She’s currently not a Tilly but I suspect that may change during school years so need to keep that in mind.

Annoyingly Sebastian and Alastair are ‘already taken’ family names as I do like those!

I do like Alfred but is Alfie still supremely popular?

Christian

(I never comment on these threads usually! I think Matilda’s brother deserves 3 syllables, good luck finding a name you love)

There was a thread going on about this - finding a name of the same number of syllables as the siblings. Is syllable envy really a thing?!

Love the name Christian!

I like it. Its quite elegant.

Imo2308 · 01/10/2025 21:21

I have a Matilda and a Theodore (Theo) 😍

I like Douglas the best. They are all nice names. I like Oscar the least, it's still nice but not in the same league as the others. Philip and Hector are two names I think go well with Matilda.

Yes, I like Hector with Matilda.

For me the order would be:

Matilda and Hector
Matilda and Frederick
Matilda and Edward ( third place only because the Ted and Tilly thing might become an issue. In terms of being old Anglo-Saxon names I think they fit beautifully together)

Yes, Alfie is every third kid ...

Calliopespa · 01/10/2025 21:23

Do you like Rufus?

I'm never sure, but to me that has an Anglo Saxon vibe too (Thinking of William Rufus)

MyShyCat · 01/10/2025 21:26

Behemoth
Terrorhurtz
Cassius
Chaos 2
Sergeant Bash
Shunt
Mr Psycho
Sir Killalot

I do like Rufus and Fergus (Gus) but also have in back of my mind they’re a bit like dog names….

I think my favourite is Frederick or Edward but I keep changing my mind!

Gerald (Gerry), Robert, or John are good sturdy names that will take the owner anywhere - David and Paul also work.

I like those two.

And I agree about the dog thing. But nice dog names!

Amammai · 01/10/2025 21:31

I like Freddie best or…

Matilda and Elijah

Matilda and Nathaniel

Matilda and Sebastian

Calliopespa · 01/10/2025 21:34

The reality is I'm not sure Tilly and Teddy is any worse than Tilly and Freddie.

The first has the T repeated but the combination Tilly and Freddie still has a strong "ie" sound at the end.

If you go with Ted, I think Tilly and Ted is fine.

Another possibility is Mattie if Tilly hasn't caught on yet. It has an Ethan Frome vibe! Mattie and Ted I like.

RosePetals86 · 01/10/2025 21:37

I think the name Thomas goes well with Matilda.

CorvusPurpureus · 01/10/2025 21:38

Mine has a brother called Edmund. He's a Ned rather than a Ted...

That's sweet. Can't an Edward be a Ned too?

Yes I like Mattie, and probably prefer Fred over Freddie. (We currently call her Mattila
the Hun at home as a joke 😂)

Someone else suggested Ned and I also quite like that!

I love Ned as a nn for Edward (Tilly and Ned / Mattie and Ned both work).

Mattie and Ned is lovely.

(Though I still rather like Matilla the Hun!)

ZiggyZowie · 01/10/2025 22:20

Matthew

Moreteaandchocolate · 01/10/2025 22:26

Lovely name ideas! George is my favourite. I also love Frederick, Oscar, Alexander, Edward and Louis. The Matilda I know has a brother called Samuel, which is lovely too.

I also like Harry, Henry, Arthur, Benjamin, Thomas, Zachary, Isaac, James, Joseph and Jonathan.

Needspaceforlego · 01/10/2025 22:27

For some reason Matilda brings Walter to mind. And I not come across a little Walter ever.

Definitely not Rufus that's absolutely a dogs name "Ruff Ruff", said Rufus

OSTMusTisNT · 01/10/2025 22:29

Alexander but only if your surname doesn't start with an E.
