I have a friend with a dd called Ambika but I think it is pronounced Umbeeka - helpful aren't I?

MargaretMountford · 03/06/2008 19:32

Forgot to say that she is Sri Lankan (mum is, child is half), so presume the name comes from there, they call her Umbi though

ambika is the name of Parvati - the main goddess - so it means mother, good woman/goddess of destruction ! It's a very strong name

MargaretMountford · 03/06/2008 22:35

Thanks -Parvati is good too, like the baby in Jewel in the Crown

I would pronounce it Am-bee-ga, and FWIW I like the name, but I don't really like non-asian children having asian names. Think its a bit weirdy..

And I can't imagine it would help then any in life, although it is an awful thing to admit, there are still many racist people in this world and when reading a CV for example, may presume the child is Asian, which may influence their thinking.

I hope you understand this is not the way I feel, but I am not too naive to know it happens. One of my very good friends is Asian, and often doesn't get interviews and things for jobs that she is more than suitable/qualified for. One must presume some racial prejudice.

oranges · 03/06/2008 22:55

oh dsm sod off.

oranges · 03/06/2008 22:58

sorry - that was rude, but i'm asian and have never had problems with interviews or getting jobs. having an unusual name can be good too, you know! my very good frend who has a bread and butterenglish name however is struggling to get a job. what does that tell you?

DirtySexyMummy · 03/06/2008 23:02

Jesus, apologies if that comment offended, it was genuinely not meant to. I personally think it is a sad, and sickening thing to know that racism does exist. However, it does. Obviously it does not affect everyone.

My XP has a very unusual name, and he has never had a problem getting a job, and has a fantastic job now, for example. I am glad you have had no problems either.

I don't know what the fact your friend has no job tells me? Nothing, really. Maybe he/she is not qualified/experience/personable? I don't know.

It was a genuine observational comment, in fact I only really though to say it as I was out for lunch with aforementioned friend today and she was telling me that she was not offered an interview again for a post where her friend did who is less experienced. Again, I did not intend to offend.

Agaain, I apologise for causing upset.

I was having this conversation with my friend today, and it was a comment she made about it being her name on her CV etc, and I guess I posted as it is close to my heart, and was so fresh in my mind.

This thread is not the place for a racism discussion however, and so I have asked for the post to be deleted.

Again, very sorry if you have been offended.

oranges · 04/06/2008 08:59

dsm don't you think it may be good for race relations if more people had names that were not ethnically exclusive, so employers could NOT tell just by a name what colour someone's skin is?

And your quote

"I don't know what the fact your friend has no job tells me?hmm Nothing, really. Maybe he/she is not qualified/experience/personable? I don't know"

kind of makes my point - someone can not get a job for LOTS of reasons.

Thanks for the apology though.

If you don't knwo how to pronounce Ambiga then maybe it's .... ambiguous! Sorry, couldn't help myself there.

I have a Carribean middle name and have had interviews on the basis of it 1 - to ask me about where it comes from (it's pretty unusual in Yorkshire) and I'm pretty sure 2 -to keep the office diversity up (imagine the horror when I turn up with fair skin and bleu eyes!).
