Is Mack/Mac a weird and silly name?

I met a bloke called Mack once and always liked the name, but I'm not usually one to go for unusual names. Will I sound like I have tried to come up with a cool and alternative name and failed? Apparently it has Irish/Scottish roots...

While we're on the subject, is Evaline a silly way to spell Evelyn?

Mack the knife springs to mind ! it's a bit old man ish

Nbg · 03/06/2008 11:30

I love the name Mack and I wanted it for both ds's but dh said no both times

Spell Evelyn the correct way otherwise the child will always have to be correcting people.

hopefully · 03/06/2008 11:35

Should i know what Mack the knife is? I am so unedcated...

I had a feeling that might be the case with Evelyn. i have developed an irrational aversion to the traditional spelling though, for no apparent reason.

Anyone else got any thoughts?

Bobby Darin version

funnypeculiar · 03/06/2008 11:38

And Evelyn right way please Although I do somehow know what you mean....

castille · 03/06/2008 11:40

It's a nickname, isn't it?

At least that's what I'd think if I heard it. I'd wonder what his real name was.

Sorry

MargaretMountford · 03/06/2008 11:41

I also think of Dr Mac in Green Wing...he was lovely but...

MrsBadger · 03/06/2008 11:41

Evaline is a real name but pronounced Ever-line, not Eve-lin.

Mac is fine as a shortening but I can't think what the long version shoul dbe

Mack the Knife

brucelovesfrumpygrumpy · 03/06/2008 11:43

Have a male friend called Mac. Its his first name. Suits him and I love it.

(I guess you'll have to be prepared for lots of people thinking its Max, thats what my friend gets a lot.)

ajandjjmum · 03/06/2008 11:45

DH's nephew was born last weekend, and is called Maverick - certainly unusual! Although I wouldn't choose it, I don't actually dislike it.

hunkermunker · 03/06/2008 11:45

As long as your surname isn't "Intosh"...

newgirl · 03/06/2008 11:47

i like maverick and mac - though if he is big baby will he get 'big mac'?

Slouchy · 03/06/2008 11:49

It's Mackenzie, isn't it?
Fine if you're scots, bit crap if not.
And a no-go if your surname is ronald or donald.

Evaline is a pretty name (pronounced Ever-line as Mrs B said). If you want her to be called Eev-lin, you need to write it Evelyn.

IMVHO.

Weegiemum · 03/06/2008 11:59

My sister is Eveline, pronounced eev-lin, she calls herself Evie. She has always had to spell it but likes her name, I think. Ds has a girl in his class called Evaline, pronounced Eva-lin. I think both are pretty and prefer the spellings with -ine to -yn (we have a Katherine, not a Kathryn)

MrsBadger · 03/06/2008 12:00

I think it is Mackenzie, but that's been spoilt (IMHO) by being used as a girl's name.

Or Malcolm...

Weegiemum · 03/06/2008 12:01

that 2nd pronounciation is eeva-lin.

Pinions · 03/06/2008 12:07

Not a weird name but reminds me of Cars every time I hear it Mac, Mac !!!!

But still nice !

RubberDuck · 03/06/2008 12:10

I'd think you were an Apple fan

hopefully · 03/06/2008 12:13

Now I see how some of you pronounce it different ways... When you pronounce Evaline in your head, is it eva-line (rhyme with fine), eva-lin (to rhyme with fin) or eva-leeen (to rhyme with clean)? or in fact, any of the above, but with the first part pronounced as 'ev' rather than 'eva' (to rhym with ever, I suppose) I appreciate I should have thught of this before deciding I liked the name!

I'm still liking Mack! Despite the horrendous Mack the knife link. Clearly I am showing my lack of pop culture knowledge. Also hadn't thought about the Max/Mac confusion. Perhaps we should see if we can think of a reasonable long name we can shorten to Mac (although I'm sorry to say MrsBadger, I may not go with Malcolm )

Oh, and if it affects anyone's opinion, surname is a relatively common one syllable surname - think Jones, Shaw, Green type names.

And middle name will almost certainly be Robert.

OP posts:
hopefully · 03/06/2008 12:16

Although I'm not sure Evelyn Robert goes that well...

Well, I do rather like my Apple Powerbook, as it happens rubberduck, but I promise it didn't inspire it (unless it was subconscious! Eek! The marketing guys would be proud of me)

Well if you start referring to him as the iBaby, then I'd really worry

hopefully · 03/06/2008 12:42

Well, babies do have certain similarities to iPods - impossible to work out, incompatable with anything else you want to do/buy, go wrong without warning, etc etc...
