Middle names

My babies are now young adults. And if I could redo those early years I would definitely rethink the middle name thing. I wish I'd given them family middle names, most specifically, I wish that I'd given my son my dad's name of Robert. My mum and dad are now gone and I miss them terribly. It would have been great to have a link.

Your children might use those names in the future.

Well they might. I can’t see my mums name ever being a thing though. I’ve never seen it flagged as a lovely vintage baby name - it’s Patricia.
I had a conversation with a young pregnant colleague a few months ago. She was struggling to think of a name for her baby. I shared my regret and she ended up giving her new baby her dads name as a middle name.

When I had my first I was so tired and anaemic, DH suggested a middle name and I just went along with it, I didn’t have the fight in me. I regret that now, but I’ve never said it to anyone.

I love the use of family names for middle names, my sisters have my parents names as middle names and I have my mum’s middle name as my middle name. We have all continued the theme with our own children and now our children are doing the same

Patricia was a common name where I'm from. Lots of Pat, Tricia, Trish probably born in the 1950s.
I think it's a great middle name - far more interesting than Rose, Grace, May etc

I'm also a big fan of middle names being family names. I gave my daughter my Nan's name for her middle name. My Nan passed away 5 years before I had my daughter and, as far as I'm aware, no one else in the family has used her name so it felt like a nice tribute and kept my mum happy. She would have turned 100 this year and her name has definitely come back in popularity, it's a top 100 name.
