I really love this name but I'm not Cornish so would it be weird to use it? The only other name I like is Fern but keep worrying it's too plain?

I dont like Elowen, but go for it if you do

childofthe607080s · 18/09/2025 12:00

Both seem fine to me

firsttimemumhugh2004 · 18/09/2025 12:01

Would you think it's weird a person with no Cornish connection using it

I feel like you've posted this before. You like it. Just use it and who gives a damn what other people think. (Most especially strangers!)

JimPanzee · 18/09/2025 12:06

I wouldn't know it's a Cornish name, just think it's a nice name. Go for it.

toastofthetown · 18/09/2025 12:06

For me Fern is far more interesting than Elowen. Almost one in ten of the girls names in the top hundred in England and Wales start with El- so she’d just blend in with Elodie and Eliza and Eloise and Ella. Fern sounds much fresher and distinct. I don’t think you need to Cornish to use Elowen. Though I’m not Cornish myself, I wouldn’t find it odd.

Errr isn't what this forum is for?

Your feeling is off because this is the first time I've posted here

It will be misspelt and mispronounced, and she'll probably be Ellie.
I don't particularly like it, it just blends into all the El- names.

Omg! Thanks that's a really good point re names beginning El, I hadn't thought of that you've given me food for thought.

Also: 'I think it works out as of all girls' names registered 2% of the names start with El.'

OxidisedOctopus · 18/09/2025 12:20

We liked Eloise but went with something else since vowel-heavy girl names are super in right now. Personally wouldn't think twice about it being Cornish, but I much prefer Fern!

AutumnNymph · 18/09/2025 12:21

As a PP said i think she will just blend into the sea of Elles and Ellies. Go with Fern. Fresh, distinct and not prone to misprounciations

captureitrememberit · 18/09/2025 12:35

I think Elowen is beautiful

NormaSars · 18/09/2025 12:39

There's a current Middle name for Elowen thread and someone suggested Goodbye.

steponme · 18/09/2025 12:46

A lot of those girls names are vastly different, though. Yes, they might all technically begin El but it doesn’t make them similar, any more than say Hallie and Hazel and Harriet despite all beginning with Ha!

Elowen is lovely but I have a Cornish name (not from Cornwall) everyone gets wrong which annoys me. Fern is nice but I do think fern cotton and I wish I didn’t as I like charlottes web!

NormaSars · 18/09/2025 12:56

@steponme , they vary a lot but many are just different spellings of the same name.

There's no common diminutive to Hallie, Harriet and Hazel, whereas most of the El- names for girls will shorten to Ellie.

whatevenwasthat · 18/09/2025 13:00

I am Cornish but I wouldn't be sending out the pitch forks your way for using a Cornish name. That said, I don't really like wyn/wen names so I wouldn't use it for that reason.

Moreteaandchocolate · 18/09/2025 13:02

I think Elowen is very pretty and don’t think you need to be from Cornwall. You do have to like the nn Ellie though…

Fern feels quite old fashioned and I find it hard to imagine on a young person, but I’m sure I’d change my mind if I met a little Fern.

Yes, but not Elowen. I may be an anomaly, I don’t know, but if I have an Eleanor, an Ellie, an Elowen, an Elsie and an Eliza in my class, I don’t think of them as the same names at all! Of course some names are very similar like Kate and Katie, Isabel and Isabella but I don’t think that’s the same as Elowen and Ellie, personally.

midlifeattheoasis · 18/09/2025 13:27

I didn’t know it was Cornish, but I can’t say it in my head without a Welsh accent!

I like Fern and don’t know anyone IRL called Fern

hoohaal · 18/09/2025 13:29

I wouldn’t worry about the Cornish aspect. I’m from Wales and assumed it was a Welsh name. Others won’t realise it’s a Cornish name, and I don’t think it would matter.

It kind of sounds like ‘Ello then’ to me, but it is pretty. Also like Fern

NormaSars · 18/09/2025 13:36

I don't think it particularly shortens to Ellie because it's more like 'L Owen' but many will say it as LON, and that shortens to Ellie.

Fern seems a lot more interesting.

Tam285 · 18/09/2025 13:38

I thought it was Welsh too. To me it sounds like a great name for a witch for some reason. I prefer Fern or Eloise.

17caterpillars1mouse · 18/09/2025 14:43

Love Elowen but didn't go for it as was worried she'd become just another Ellie

Not a fan of Fern. I think it sounds harsh
