Baby name change

I’ve finally decided to change my daughter’s first name before she turns one.

I really love a name that’s completely different from her current one, but I’m worried it might feel awkward for family, friends, and even for us, since we’ve been calling her by her current name for 11 months.

Another option is to simply add the letter “a” to her existing name. I like that version, though not as much as the completely different name. The benefit is that no one will really notice the change, and it would still feel more acceptable to me than her current name.

what do you think guys and what you advise please

FWIW I actually hadn't heard of it (the drug).

I had heard the song sung suggestively for your other choice of name.

But I think both associations will go right over the heads of children.

If the name is Leen, aren’t people surprised because they think it’s the verb ‘lean’ rather than a slang word for drugs?

Bridgetjonesheart · 20/09/2025 22:39

People are really weird and rigid about changing names. It actually blows peoples mind for a totally unfathomable reason to me. You gave birth to them and will look after them the rest of your life, call them what you want.

I’ve had to Google as never heard of slang Lean.

Just add an a to make Leena or whatever spelling you choose.

Layla is not a nice name anyway.

@Bridgetjonesheart , I don't think anyone is weird or rigid about changing a baby's name. I know people who have done it. If the name is misspelt, or they want to change the name from something like Xander to Alexander, it makes sense.

OP has started countless threads about this, I think, over several months. She hasn't decided on the new name. The baby is probably 11 months old. Once the baby is older than 12 months, the name change is treated differently.

From what I remember (the posts were from a different username), the baby has 2 passports, so it's a bit more complicated than changing Pheobe to Phoebe or Evie to Evelyn.

Bridgetjonesheart · 21/09/2025 21:49

@DuchessOfNarcissex why does it only make sense for a minor change though? What if it were a total change. It still makes sense. I know the posts, I’ve seen them before so I gathered it was the same woman. I feel sorry for her, she seems to be really struggling. Things like this are extremely hard whilst trying to look after the child night and day too. I hope she finds the support she needs.

@Mcoco , that isn't the baby's current name, so isn't the name that sounds like a drug that most of us don't seem to have heard of. There's a link on page 1 to another thread which might enlighten you.

Imagine OP had a DD called Lucy. OP regretted the link with a drug, and she's asking whether to change the name to Lucia, change it to Layla which she loves, or leave it as it is.

(The name isn't Lucy)

Thank you I will look at the link now.
