Nothing at all. It's just not very fashionable at the moment.
Purists would also go for Stephen, I gather, rather than the phonetic spelling.

MsDemeanor · 01/06/2008 22:27

Stephen is a nicer spelling IMO. It's not fashionable, that's all. But is much more 'different' as a result than all the so-called 'individual' names around nowadays, usually beginning with K for some reason.
Your son would be ahead of the pack!

fishie · 01/06/2008 22:27

stephen
stephan

is a nice name, looks good written, sounds well. does have steve connotations of course, is that the prob do you think?

MsDemeanor · 01/06/2008 22:28

Snap!!

Lazylou · 01/06/2008 22:29

I liked Stephen for DS but couldn't have it as it rhymes too much with out surname.

I always think of a conversation I overheard on the bus when I see threads like this.
Two lively teenagers discussing (? an older sister/acquaintance) someone's new baby.
"He's lovely...but what were they thinking of - such a WEIRD name"
"Oh shame, what?"
"DAVID. I mean..."

WanderingTrolley · 01/06/2008 22:31

Nice name, not a lot of them about at the mo. Not out of fashion like Kevin and Trevor though. Good solid English name. Usually spelt with 'ph' not 'v', but not always (Spielburg is a Steven.)

What did your dp say when you asked him what was wrong with it?

lol at David weirdy name. I've not come across a baby called John around 'ere ever. Mind you they probably spelt David Day-vyd.

Also, if Stephen's in the New Testament it's prob not as English as I thought

Bink · 01/06/2008 22:40

And it reminds me of a conversation I had with a new acquaintance with that name, years ago ... I said (re the spelling) "are you a v or a pfff?" [say it out loud] and he laughed and laughed and laughed. (He is gay.)

Anyway, I think it is a good name.

GreenElizabeth · 01/06/2008 22:44

It's a name of his own generation. I wouldn't pick Jennifer for the same reason, but I bet that there are more likely to be two Arthurs than two Stephens.

Stephen Spielberg has done alright.

UniversallyChallenged · 01/06/2008 22:50

Sorry - iagree with your dh

Stefan is better imho

AbbeyA · 02/06/2008 08:14

I like it but with the correct spelling of Stephen.

EffiePerine · 02/06/2008 08:29

Stephen is nice (I know a baby Stephen).

schneebly · 02/06/2008 08:32

it's just not terribly fashionable - nothing wrong with it as a name it is quite nice. But then I have a 3 year old called Alan

AbbeyA · 02/06/2008 08:33

I also quite like Stephanie for a girl.

throckenholt · 02/06/2008 08:39

we have it as second name for one of ours. (with a ph I think - - can't remember ! - my brother has it as a second name with a v).

Maybe it is a generational thing - when I was a kid Stephen was one of the most common names (along with John, Robert, Mike and Dave).

MrsBadger · 02/06/2008 08:54

I like it (also David)

but I really don't like Steve. Or Dave. Both of which are kind of inevitable.

DonutMum · 02/06/2008 08:56

Hiya. I like it. Steven is the Scottish way of spelling it, Stephen the English. Personally, prefer Stephen. My old boss was called Stephen and he is fab.

TotalChaos · 02/06/2008 08:56

My DS is called Steven. I'll get my coat shall I

Botbot · 02/06/2008 08:57

It's my dad's name (Stephen though), so of course I like it.

As for the 'Steve' thing, you should bear in mind that all the Stephens/Stevens in my year at school weren't nicknamed 'Steve', they were nicknamed 'Ste'. Which I think sounds horrible.

AbbeyA · 02/06/2008 08:59

I like David as well but I think that you can't help getting Steve and Dave which is why I didn't use them. It is sad the way they get shortened. I love Edward but didn't use it for the same reasons. In fact many boys names were ruled out this way because I would want to keep them as Daniel, Christopher, Thomas etc.

belgo · 02/06/2008 09:02

Stephen is fine, but if your dh doesn't like it there's not much you can do!

Stefan is the foreign way of spelling it - not sure which country though.
