Saga

Scandi-British family expecting a girl. Already have a Magnus.

Does Saga work in the UK? Very common across Scandinavia - I’ve never met one in the UK however.

If not - what other good names to go with our sons name that is easy for Brits and Scandis.

Two weeks to go and we are no clearer on a name…! Foolishly I told some suggestions to family and all raised eyebrows / made stupid comments (on both sides of the North Sea).

I associate saga with life insurance.... sorry!

Squishymallows · 29/08/2025 09:57

Saga : a long, involved story, account, or series of incidents.

purehunners · 29/08/2025 09:58

Saga definitely makes me think life insurance and holidays for retired people. Sorry. Having said that it’s your baby and your choice, and as you say everyone will have an opinion whatever name you choose.

BlakeCarrington · 29/08/2025 09:58

It’s pretty but doesn’t work brilliantly in the UK I’m afraid because it’s the name of a large charity and travel company for older people so it would sound a bit like she’s named for that.

BeaLola · 29/08/2025 09:59

Reminds me of insurance /holiday company

How about Freja or Astrid

BlakeCarrington · 29/08/2025 09:59

I think the scandi name Ebba is really nice.

mixedbeans · 29/08/2025 10:00

Saga doesn't work in the UK. What about Ana or Kirstin?

Bitzee · 29/08/2025 10:00

Saga to me is either a long winded story or the company that does insurance, cruises etc. for the over 50s. What about Freya/Freja, Astrid, Alma. Or not strictly a scandi name but Madeleine like the Swedish princess.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 29/08/2025 10:00

Holidays

Yes I assumed someone would say that.

I can’t see that younger generations would jump to that association - and, there’s no end of names which are associated with other things which don’t seem to cause a problem.

Thats the kind of silly comment I was referring to - thinking of the children in my nursery they have all sort of wild and wonderful names (from all corners of the planet!).

Freja is too common and we already have an Astrid in the family.

Most other popular names at the moment are of the ‘four letters ending in -a’ variety, which are not unpleasant but definitely all a bit of a current fad (and all sound the same..!)

Yes there was one in my class at school. Never met another. It was just her name

Children aren't old enough to think life insurance.

Jesus, no.

Thanks for these suggestions.

I think I need to find something that’s common in the UK but also there - anything not immediately recognisable (and able to say easily, more or less correctly) could be annoying later on for them.

They don’t stay children forever

I’m in my 50s and don’t think I’d be best pleased if my parents had called me Saga!

But Saga is a four letter name ending in a?

@92andyou my children are older so have no idea what names are trendy now lol

No, I think the life insurance thing is older people - unlikely to influence younger people in the same way.

The children I know now have vastly more diverse names than when I was at school - often non-British and no one bats an eye.

Good point! Hard g helps it be less soft
I suppose.

Sounds like I am back to the drawing board anyway.

There’s a Saga in my daughter’s class (13) . It was odd to my ear initially but the children have never questioned it and now I’m used to it I find it very pretty.

hibeat · 29/08/2025 10:10

She will be teased as wether her parents made her in their old age, on vacation, on a cruise. No does not work.

shellyleppard · 29/08/2025 10:06

It’s not trendy in the UK - it is in Norway / Sweden / Denmark but also quite traditional there.

I don’t even know how many there are in the UK actually - few enough it’s gets a ‘??’ response as above vs a name like Astrid.

OP posts:
OldBeyondMyYears · 29/08/2025 10:11

OP, you specifically asked for opinions on whether the name would work in the UK.
Quite legitimately, posters have told you no, it doesn’t, because of the instant association with SAGA holidays and insurance for older people. Your response to a poster, saying their ‘silly response’ was entirely what you expected is actually quite rude!

Of course most people’s first association with the word ‘saga’ is going to be this company…it’s HUGE!

But you do you…clearly you didn’t really want anyone to give their honest opinion, so why did you bother asking? 🤷‍♀️

Snorlaxo · 29/08/2025 10:12

Saga won’t be teased when she’s at school but as an adult, her peers will have heard of the over 50s holidays and insurance.
