What names will be seen as dated in 10-20 years time?

Or is it unlikely names will date like previous generations as there is a wider variety of name choices?

I think the current trend for 'ie' names for boys will pass - Alfie, Albie, Freddie etc. So perhaps in time they may seem dated.

It’s already passed I think

Definitely Arlo for boys, I really can't see that still being widely used in 10 years. I think it will be looked back on as a 20s name in years to come.

For girls, I actually think names like Margot, Maeve, Ottilie and Ophelia will date badly as they have all rocketed so much in such a short space of time. I think we'll all be long over those names come the mid 2030s.

Aria, Mila and Luna feel very faddy too.

Zuve · 23/08/2025 12:23

I think older names, that are not so popular will completely dissapear. Such as Tony, Malcolm, Steven, Margaret, Marion, Kathleen

The stats suggest differently. Alfie has tailed off a bit in recent years but the trend itself is still going very strong.

Agree, the popularity of these names has already peaked.

While it's rare for a name to stay very popular over decades, some definitely age better than others e.g. Emma or Alex - popular when I was at school in the 80s/90s and I don't think it's seem as dated now. Or Elizabeth - not common but not unusual amongst my peers and while not common now, I don't think it's viewed as dated.

Overall I think it's names that have a rapid rise in popularity, stay popular for long enough for the name to become common, then have a rapid decline, that are most likely to be seen as dated years later as they relate to a specific decade or two. But these things are circular - the Olivia I went to school with was seen as having a very uncool, old-fashioned posh name - look at it now!

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 23/08/2025 12:34

Isla.

margegunderson · 23/08/2025 12:34

Who fucking cares? Also - they all date as they go in fashions mostly no matter how hard you ponder. It doesn’t matter.

manicpixieschemegirl · 23/08/2025 12:35

Olivia. While it’s a beautiful name, it’s just so ubiquitous. All the cutest names that have been popular recently go without saying. I also noticed Nova is climbing up the ranks which I predict will age like milk.

For boys, Arlo, Milo, Sonny, Teddy.

Perhaps but I know of young Maggies, Anthonys, Mariannes and Katies.

NuffSaidSam · 23/08/2025 12:37

Any name that was outside the top 100 a few years ago and is now top 20. Anything that rockets in popularity will age badly.

No, these will be back in a decade or two - early 20th names like Jean and June so it won’t be long before mid century names come through - baby Malcolms and Pamelas aren’t far off. Once upon a time no one could have imagined little Alberts and Ediths but there are now thousands of them.

I agree with you. Some of those names, Jean, Barbara and Malcom etc are reappearing.

Absolutely. Those very fashionable names really date.

Thejackrussellsrule · 23/08/2025 13:07

Hunter, Jackson, Jayden, Kayden, River, Arlo, Nevaeh, Ava, Esmae, any girls name with Mae as the middle name.

Dearover · 23/08/2025 13:09

Every name currently recommended on the Baby Names threads. People forget that they're not naming a dog, but a future adult. I do wonder if those recommending these names have actually called their own children Edward & Emily.

Limonades · 23/08/2025 13:12

I think these are already starting to sound dated/overused

Alfie, Archie, Noah, Theo

Olivia, Isla, Ellie

I’d hate to be called Edward or Emily - they are both so overused and dull. I have a common surname and don’t want a common first name too.

3pears · 23/08/2025 13:17

I agree with most ie nick names

Freddie
Albie
Archie
Reggie
Evie
Gracie
Edie
Maddie

etc

I think Stephen is a lovely name and will survive, but ‘Steve’ may not. Same for Tony. .Anthony may survive, but Tony probably not.

Malcolm’s definitely a goner!

muffintop83 · 23/08/2025 18:24

Arlo came about with Good Dinosaur movie I believe. Weren’t people calling their daughters Khaleesi for a while too following Game Of Thrones? Such things tend to appear in popular culture and become a fad. A few years ago it was all Jayden, Cayden and Hayden.

I do think there’s a lot to be said for timeless names like Harry, Charlie, Jack and George. They will never go out of fashion and are genuinely nice names, there’s a reason they have lasted well.

DaisyChain505 · 23/08/2025 18:27

Arlo. It’s awful.
