Opinions on the name Sol for a boy.

Not expecting, just saw it on a TV show and thought it was an interesting name and wondered what mums net would think!

I think I like it - but I’m not sure how it would grow with a child.

The only sol I know was short for Solomon.

PurpleChrayn · 22/08/2025 10:14

I like it.

Loubylie · 22/08/2025 10:15

I like it.
Agree it's short for Solomon which is a cool name and not overused.

mynameiscalypso · 22/08/2025 10:17

My immediate thought is Sol Campbell, the former England footballer

dintyn · 22/08/2025 10:17

Campbell - I'd think you were a Gunner, there were brothers at school called Thierry, Kolo and Sol (!)

DysmalRadius · 22/08/2025 10:17

Sol Campbell is the main Sol I can think of and he hasn't ruined the name by being an obvious bellend as far as I'm aware, so thats something! My oldest wanted to call his little brother soldering iron when I was pregnant and I did briefly consider Sol as a compromise... 😂

Snorlaxo · 22/08/2025 10:17

I can imagine a teen and grown man called Sol. I think it sounds very relaxed and cool. Makes me think of sunny summer holidays. (Sol= Sun in Spanish)

Glitchymn1 · 22/08/2025 10:18

Saul I like.

Sol sounds short for something.

Indicateyourintentions · 22/08/2025 10:19

Lovely name

Goandygo · 22/08/2025 10:19

I like it.
Also like Saul and Seth.

Saul Goodman 🤣

I bet one at a toddler group. But she was a girl and the mum was spanish. Personally it makes me think of that cheap beer that’s like a Corona but not.

ginasevern · 22/08/2025 10:23

I'd prefer Saul or Solomon with Sol as a nn. Personally I'd rather give a child a "proper", classical name and let them choose to shorten it as they wish.

SirChenjins · 22/08/2025 10:33

Lager

girljulian · 22/08/2025 10:34

I know a 21 year old girl called Sol. It really suits her. Her mum is Ecuadorian.

Pemba · 22/08/2025 10:41

I knew a Spanish woman who's daughter was named Sol - short for Maria del Sol. I think that's a thing in Spanish speaking countries.

Here, I think it's more usually for boys, maybe short for Solomon?

BoleynMemories13 · 22/08/2025 10:47

I'd assume it's short for Solomon (although apparently Sol Campbell is Sulzeer, I've never heard of that).

Saul makes a better stand alone name that Sol, which feels a little incomplete. Slightly different pronunciation, but not by much. Different meaning though.

DramaAlpaca · 22/08/2025 10:51

I quite like it. I don't like Solomon or Saul though. Just Sol is nice.

WifeOfAGemini · 22/08/2025 11:01

Ok unless you’ve got a London accent (it need to be pronounced properly, otherwise it’ll sound more like “sow”

I think there are better names!

StarlightBlues · 22/08/2025 11:20

I prefer Saul but I do like Sol. I think I would use Solomon as a given name though.

CurlewKate · 22/08/2025 11:25

Short for Solomon.

Y2ker · 22/08/2025 14:15
