Alternatives to Iona/Ailsa/Esther/Esme

Looking for inspiration!

My husband and I are due with our second baby soon, and are struggling with girls names. We have Scottish heritage and Iona has been our favourite for years but we might not be able to use it, as we live abroad and there are some major cultural issues with it where we live. We therefore need to find an alternative that we like as much, and are really struggling.

Names we have like but aren’t 100% sold on for various reasons are:

  • Ailsa (ideally don’t want a name beginning with A)
  • Esther (ideally don’t want a name ending “-er”)
  • Esme
  • Cassia
  • Eliza
  • Leonora

For more context

  • We are both English but with strong Scottish heritage
  • Our current son is Arthur, so we’d rather avoid names starting with an “A”
  • Our surname ends “-er” so would also rather avoid names ending in that
  • We like strong names with an established history which ideally aren’t too popular
  • We don’t want something that is too predictable or “matchy” with Arthur
  • We will likely move back to the UK at somepoint and will be based in the south east

Any suggestions? We’ve spent a lot of time thinking about this and are struggling, so any input gratefully received 🙏

P.S we’ve not 100% ruled Iona out, but it really is problematic where we live and the baby will have citizenship of this country so will likely spend a lot of time here in their lifetime, so we need a strong backup/alternative to consider

I know you don't want A names but Alba, Ainsley or Elsbeth/Elizabeth Isobel, Fiona Maisie.

Coffeeishot · 14/08/2025 09:31

Actually not Alba think it would be a bit too matchy matchy with Arthur .

TizerorFizz · 14/08/2025 09:38

Fiona, Harriet, Heather, Isla, Freya, Moira, Skye, Elspeth, Rosalind.

if you end up in the South East, any -a name will sound like it ends in -er/-uh.
I think Ailsa is ok because it's not the same A sound as in Arthur.

My favourite from your list is Esther.
I'm not keen on Esme, Iona, Eliza, Cassia or Leonora.

Thank you so much for all the great suggestions so far, there are some here that I will definitely look into. In particular I like Freya, Moira, Catriona and Elsbeth. I actually also really like Erin and Eilish but we don’t have any Irish heritage so I think those feel too much for a stretch.

@Emanwenym very good point on the pronunciation point, I will reconsider Esther with that in mind!

The Elspeth suggestion is also now making me think we should reconsider Elsa, which I have always loved but previously ruled out because of the Frozen connection

Sorry, I gave you some A names, but i grew up with the same initials as my DB and loved it! And we’ve never had any problems with sharing initials in 50 years!

Alexandrine · 14/08/2025 16:44

I always suggest Vaila for Scots girls. I’m surprised it’s so underused in comparison to more popular Iona.

Is the initial the only reason you aren’t sure about Ailsa though? As my brother and I share initials and it’s always been a help rather than a hindrance (letters/parcels either had full names or Mr/Miss so no problems there, but my Mum could put “A. Surname” on all our stuff which meant it could be handed down more easily, plus it just sounds cute imo if you are only having the two - I think Arthur and Ailsa sound great together)

TizerorFizz · 14/08/2025 17:49

Elsa was the lioness in Born Free. A tad over used in my view.

Emanwenym · 14/08/2025 17:58

@TizerorFizz , You must be in an Elsa hotspot, it's not been in the top 100 names. Babies called Elsa in England & Wales since 1996, number 558 in 2024.

Norastroud · 14/08/2025 20:07

I initially thought of Freya - gorgeous name with a lovely historic meaning.

or Elsa / Elsie
Margot?

goodluck!
