We’re expecting our 2nd baby, our son is Emrys George and we having our girls name already picked out but no name for another boy. We both really like Avery, I think it goes quite well with Emrys. We also liked Silas but thought that may be too similar sounding to Emrys. Middle name will be Jack. Wdyt?

Is Avery your girl's name?
It makes me think of Ovary and Aviary, and of postage scales.
Silas is nice and nothing like Emrys.

I like it. I also like Everly but both these names won’t be popular on here because they’re erring on the American vibe…. (Just don’t mention Christmas Eve boxes either!)

Avery is a boy’s name so I imagine she meant it’s for a second son :)

OP, I like it! It goes well Emrys.

Emrys is a lovely name btw it goes well with Ioan if you wanted to continue on a Welsh theme.

No Avery is our boys name, it’s gender neutral but we prefer it for a boy.

It’s the S sound on Emrys and Silas which makes me feel like that might be a bit much if I’m shouting both their names!

Emrys is lovely but very Welsh so neither Avery or Silas strike me as being a similar style personally. The Emrys I’ve met have brothers named Macsen, Osian, and Ifan. But more popular/well known names like Dylan, Tristan or Owen would also sound good imo.

I do like Macsen but would rather not use another Welsh name. We just liked Emrys, although my dads side of the family are Welsh, but I wouldn’t want it to become a theme just in case we do have any more children and have to carry that on!.

I only know female Avery's so I wouldn't choose it. I also think Emrys and Avery together are a bit of a mouthful.

MuffGuff · 10/08/2025 16:56

Silas reminds me of the shit foreign series that used to be on in the school holidays- we used to call it Silage.

Love Avery for a boy.

Moreteaandchocolate · 10/08/2025 16:59

I only know female Averys

I like Silas and think it’s sounds fine with Emrys.

Fair enough. You might consider Maxim then, instead of Welsh Macsen? as it’s very similar style/meaning but European (there’s debate about exact country of origin but it’s popular in a lot of countries). Magnus is another variant.

Of your two original choices, I’d personally lean towards Silas as I find the sound of Avery too Avian. I prefer similar Cyrus though as then there’s no potential silage associations.

Horrific.

RogueFemale · 10/08/2025 23:01

@mominthemoon Avery is a well-known label brand. https://www.avery.co.uk/

I would avoid it.

Silas is much better.

Daffodilsarefading · 10/08/2025 23:04

I don’t like it. Reminds me of Aviary.

HugoYorway · 10/08/2025 23:06

Homepage - Avery Berkel

The scales that used to be in post rooms just had Avery on them.

It's a bit Ava-y (pronounced Avery hereabouts).

MavisandHetty · 10/08/2025 23:07

I only know female Avery’s.

It’s a very American name, and specifically a 1990s preppy New England girls’ name.

Sorry.

Avery Jack is perfect.
Handsome and known but not too popular.

I know two small boys called Avery. One is four and one is 6 months. I love the book Charlotte's Webb.

lilaclemon · 11/08/2025 10:00

Lovely name

toastandegg · 11/08/2025 12:12

I love Avery

OSTMusTisNT · 11/08/2025 12:15

Sorry, Avery is too much like Aviary unless you fancy budgie as a nn. (I know one Avery and yes, everyone including the teachers called him Budgie!)

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 11/08/2025 13:04

Sorry OP, but I think Avery is going the way of Aubrey as a traditionally male name which has gone past unisex towards female. Its use for girls has overtaken that for boys in England and Wales. It's maddening but sadly this process is always a one-way street: see Hil(l)ary and Lindsay.

It's a Norman variant of Ælfred. How about Alfred?

NoVibrato · 11/08/2025 15:53

I loved Charlotte's Web as a child; the American Midwestern brother and sister in the book were called Avery and Fern. The names seemed wildly exotic to me all those decades ago. But because of that novel, I'll always think of Avery as a boy's name.

RuthW · 11/08/2025 15:58

Avery is a lovely girl’s name.

Moveoverdarlin · 11/08/2025 16:00

I think it’s awful. Just reminds me of birds crapping in a big smelly cage.

Kumquatzest · 11/08/2025 17:14

I don't think I've met a man named Avery in my life and I can't think of any famous ones either. My main impression of it is as an American girls' name. Personally I wouldn't choose it, but you do you.
I like Silas and I don't think it's too similar to Emrys.
