Girl names - Katherine, Imogen, Cassandra, Cameron

Hi everyone,

I posted a while back, and now getting closer to due date I’d love to hear some more opinions on the current list - it’s progressed a bit since my last post. definitely leaning to c/k names and longer names with nickname options.
we have a DD Alexandra already.

  • Katherine /Catherine - nn Kate, Kit, at a stretch maybe Cass/Cassie? This has been a front runner for a while. Don’t love Katy or Kathy nn - aware this may happen anyway!
  • Cameron - Cam as nn - I know a lot of people really don’t like it for a girl but I guess I enjoy gender neutral nn options (our Alexandra is an Alex)
  • Cassandra - this is a recent entry. Love the nn Cass or Cassie. Our kids always go by their nn and I feel like Alex and Cass is fine; but is it too much to have Alexandra and Cassandra?? I don’t love Cassidy/Cassia/Cassiopeia.
  • Imogen - also a recent addition to the list. I liked this a lot a few years back then went off it. Really don’t like nn Immy so would prob try do Jean/Jeanie type thing or maybe Mo.

thanks!

Katherine is beautiful and incredibly versatile for nn

I like it pronounced as 3 syllables not 2 (“Kath-rine”) personally.

Watermelonnice · 10/08/2025 07:50

I like Catherine with nickname Cat.

Or Imogen which is lovely too but difficult to shorten.

Numbersaremything · 10/08/2025 07:54

My mid 20s Kathryn is Katie to the rest of the world and Kates to us. She likes the flexibility for work (Kathryn) and friends (Katie)

keiratwiceknightly · 10/08/2025 07:55

I have a Catherine who is always known as Cassie - we loved Cassie first but like you didn’t fancy Cassandra. It’s a great combo despite being a bit unusual.

My choice would be Katherine. It has a similar feel to Alexandra and both names are giving gravitas. I don’t like any of the others - apologies.

I agree

I like that people are doing this - it feels like it gives that extra little push for me to thinking Katherine/Catherine will be the “one” :)

Catherine (hate Katherine - the spelling doesn't look right to me - I know, I know!!)
I wouldn't mind the nicknames Cath or Cate

Mossie123 · 10/08/2025 08:49

Excellent choices of names, OP.

I have a Catherine shortened to Cassie (she was introduced as Cassie from birth), and an Imogen as well! Also dislike any shortening. We haven’t referred to her as anything except Imogen, and so far (she’s 5.5), it’s not been shortened by anyone else.

user2848502016 · 10/08/2025 08:50

Katherine would be my preference, I like Kathy/Kate/Kitty as a nn

Imogen is lovely too

Don’t like Cameron for a girl, and Cassandra is a bit dated - Cassie is ok

wafflesmgee · 10/08/2025 08:52

Love Imogen and katherine
strongly dislike Cameron, just reminds me of david Cameron or a rude posh rugbyplayer who hassles people in pubs

I have a Katherine and an Imogen! Nicknames have evolved sort of naturally: Kat and Iggy.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 10/08/2025 12:50

Not too surprised Cameron isn’t getting much love here. For more context I am outside the UK, and I think Cameron for a girl probably works better where I am. And also while I’ve seen comments about only fools and horses before, I’d never heard of it until I started looking at the name Cassandra (and reading about it on here!) - assume it’s a UK show? The historical meaning doesn’t bother me too much.

@TenThousandSpoons00 , Cameron means crooked nose.

Only Fools and Horses was a long-running sit com on British tv, and it was very popular. Expressions and phrases from the show are now part of the vocabulary here.

Alexandra and my favourites, inspired from your list ..

Katharine - Kitty, Kate, Kat
Catherine - Cate, Cat
Caroline - Caro, Caz
Camilla - Cam, Milla

Firebird83 · 13/08/2025 08:47

Katherine “Kit” would go well with Alexandra “Alex”

ladygindiva · 13/08/2025 10:57

Afaik Cassandra and Alexandra are pretty much the same name , I believe. So I'd pick Katherine.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 13/08/2025 11:03

@ladygindiva has a point. Cassandra - Wikipedia

Cassandra or Kassandra (/kəˈsændrə/;[2] Ancient Greek: Κασσάνδρα, pronounced [kas:ándra], sometimes referred to as Alexandra; Ἀλεξάνδρα)[3] in Greek mythology was a Trojan priestess dedicated to the god Apollo and fated by him to utter true prophecies but never to be believed. In modern usage her name is employed as a rhetorical device to indicate a person whose accurate prophecies, generally of impending disaster, are not believed.

TenThousandSpoons00 · 13/08/2025 11:37

@DuchessOfNarcissex @ladygindiva i did not know this! I mean I know they sound pretty similar with the endings and I think probably can’t do it for that reason; but this is also good to know.

Catherine/Katherine is definitely seeming like the best option, I just need to decide how to spell it :)

@TenThousandSpoons00 , you are not alone. I was trying to disprove what the pp had said. Silly me Smile, but you live and learn.
If you are going to call her Kate or Kit, use the Katherine spelling to avoid the C/K difference in initials. If you are going to call her Cass, use Catherine.

If they are going to be Alex and Cassie, does it matter what the long forms are?

TenThousandSpoons00 · 13/08/2025 20:45

@DuchessOfNarcissex it kind of does and kind of doesn’t - I wouldn’t give a long name I don’t like, even if I like the nickname! But yes I’m thinking I probably need to decide the nickname/day to day names (Kate or Cassie at this point) and take the spelling for Katherine/Catherine from that most likely. I’ve seen several mentions from people saying Cassie from Catherine is fine and I think Catherine is a better option than Cassandra now for that, to avoid having the same -Andra ending. But I do love the simplicity of Kate.

thanks everyone for your comments :)

Sounds like Catherine it is. Good choice.

Meadowflower2023 · 13/08/2025 21:52

I know a female Cameron and she’s a beautiful person inside and out so that gets my vote.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 13/08/2025 22:00

You can have Cate from Catherine aswell. It’s rarer than Kate but means you can use both cate and Cassie (also nothing wrong with Kate from Catherine)

I'm a Katharine but have always been known as Kate, except a few friends call me Katie Lou (middle name Lucy). Love my name! Nice to have nn options.
