I've seen the word poncey used when referring to names. So which names are considered "Ponsey"?

see, pretentious is different, it's giving a kid a name purely because you think it will make them seem to be from a higher social class than they actually hail from. Pretentious=faking it imo

OverMyDeadBody · 29/05/2008 08:29

pretentious is what the middle classes do best

Algernon
Montmorency
Mountjoy
St John
Peregrine
Jolyon

Hortensia
Araminta
Cosima

I would. Pronounce it correctly, I mean , not use it as a name. But I can also pronounce Feathersonehaugh, Cholmondely, Caius College and waistcoat and I know how to eat asparagus.

Je suis une ponce celebre!

Damn, I love poncy names!! Would love to call a kid Jolyon!

I am a Yorkshire lass from a working class background and I blame that on the fact that I didn't know Araminta was a real name, I thought it was just a joke name to make fun of our betters

I'll get my coat. I seriously considered Peregrine (Perry) first time round (but had a girl) and if I had a second girl I would seriously consider Cosima.

Also loving Maximus (that, along with Gabriel, were DHs fave boys names)

SmoothandWilkie · 29/05/2008 19:56

Does everyone know how to pronounce waistcoat and eat asparagus then? I thought my pseudo-Edwardian childhood might have left me with one or two pieces of information not generally know in the modern world, but obviously not!

nkf · 30/05/2008 11:23

There is a kind of name which smacks of trying very hard isn't there? I once met a little boy called Skippy, short for Scipio. I'd say that was trying too hard. As well as being the name of a kangaroo.

obvabitponcey · 30/05/2008 11:27

Ok, had to change my name, but I am defending Monty. As we have one. And he is gorgeous. Montgomery for when he is a high Court judge.

nkf · 30/05/2008 11:29

Is it really pronounced Fanshaw?

ShowOfHands · 30/05/2008 11:31

I used to live next to a Ludmilla and also know a Hepzibah Japonica. Poncetastic.

Knew a Ptolemy at school who went east to find himself. He's going to be disappointed I feel.

Hugo's not poncy btw. It's lovely.
