Thoughts on Alia?

Twentytwotwelve · 06/08/2025 21:37

Also, is Alia your preferred spelling, or another variant, such as Aliya, Aaliyah, and so on?

Last name begins with a Y.

We are contemplating Molly as a middle name as that is my mother’s name. However, that is not set in stone, and depends on flow and overall ‘vibe’.

I haven’t seen Alia spelt like this before - I love it. It’s really pretty and I would use this spelling.

Keroppi · 06/08/2025 21:45

How is it said? Like the singer Aaliyah or Al-e-a?

It is most commonly pronounced the same as Aaliyah: ah-LEE-ah

Sorry OP - it’s a try hard ‘unique’ name for the sake of it.

User415373 · 06/08/2025 21:52

It's ok but so many girls names start and end a vowel now they are all sounding the same!
I know one spelled Ailiah, one Ayla, one Aiyla. Sound like Isla, Orla, Ayla, Ayla etc!

BoleynMemories13 · 06/08/2025 21:55

Do you have Arabic roots? If so it's a pretty name. I've seen so many different spellings (Aaliyah, Aliyah, Aliyah, Alia, Aleeha etc), but I think my favourite is Aliyah. It feels more feminine and probably less likely to encounter pronunciation issues that Alia, which feels a bit unfinished to me.

If you don't have Arabic roots, I find it a bit try hard.

ScupperedbytheSea · 06/08/2025 21:57

I would say Alia like AL-ee-uh.

I think you need a double aa to sound like the singer R-lee-uh.

The second one, Aaliyah, sounds nicer imo.

SchnizelVonKrumm · 06/08/2025 21:57

I think Alia is a good spelling if it's pronounced Al-EE-a.

For that pronunciation the Aaliyah spelling makes no sense - to my mind the double "a" at the start suggests it would be AH-lya (like the character in Corrie).

VeryQuaintIrene · 06/08/2025 22:01

For anyone who knows Latin, it means "other things" (as it "et al.") This may or may not be a concern to you and tbf, you'd be pronouncing it differently.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 06/08/2025 22:25

I like it, and I have only met one spelt as 'Alia'. The others have been spelt as Aaliyah, but I have no strong feelings either way when it comes to spelling.

Alexandrine · 06/08/2025 22:28

Very pretty. And I personally prefer this sleeker spelling. But you would have to accept she might get a bit lost in a sea of Ayla, Ada, Ava, Aria- these vowel heavy type of names seem very popular at the moment!

Moreteaandchocolate · 06/08/2025 22:37

I read Alia to rhyme with Aria “AH-lee-a” (stress on the first syllable). But then I also thought Aaliyah / Aliyah were pronounced “Ah- LIE- ah, (not Ah- LEE-ah) so maybe that’s just me!

Alia is pretty and people would only need to be told once how to pronounce it if they made the same mistake as me!

Shayisgreat · 06/08/2025 22:45

I like it but spelt that way I'd pronounce it AL-ya rather than Ah-LEE-a.

I would presume it was pronounced a (like in cat) - lee - uh

Emanwenym · 07/08/2025 15:25

inter alia
I'd say Alia as Al-ya not Al-ee-a.

miniaturepixieonacid · 08/08/2025 01:35

I think it's really pretty but I've never seen that spelling.

Girls I know with that name all pronouced it slightly differently and all had different backgrounds:
Aaliyah X 2 (both Arabic) (one said AL -ee-uh and one said AHL-ee-uh)
Aliya (Russian-British) (said a - LEE -uh)
Alya (American-British) (said AL-YUH)

Bournetilly · 08/08/2025 01:39

My DH liked the name Alia but pronounced Al-ee-a, I also pronounced it that way when I read it.

I definitely prefer the spelling Alia to the others though although could be pronounced wrong.

I don’t dislike the name but I don’t love it, it’s ok.

I'd do Aalia. Alia sound like a short A. lovely name

Aalia = Aah - Lee - a
Alia = Uh - Lee - a

My daughter is Aliyah. Pronounced Ah-LEE-ah. She gets shortened to Lee Lee :) She gets lots of compliments on her name and it really suits her. It was perfect when she was a tiny baby but now she is really growing up it's still relevant and she fits in still.

user1492757084 · 08/08/2025 05:42

Use Alia as the spelling.
I would pronounce it as AHL-ee-uh - rhymes with Talia.

Aaliyah and Alyia remind me of a liar.

Alia Molly Y goes okay.
Other ideas..
Ayesha Molly Y
Alexandra Molly Y
Aster Molly Y

No it really isn’t racism. We were asked our opinion on the name here and I gave it. I’m sure it’s a beautiful Arabic name elsewise. It isn’t the name but the spelling. But thanks for just assuming….always good to be on the lookout to accuse someone of something they didn’t do.

MothPhobic · 08/08/2025 12:26

I'll admit it's kind of a pretty name, but a bit 'try hard' just for the sake of uniqueness.

The first thought that popped into my mind when I read it was that it sounds like something I'd associate with a woman's period. Whether it's a new brand of moon cup type of thing, or a period tracker. That's just my thoughts. But that'd put me right off it it lol.

Emanwenym · 08/08/2025 13:14

It's similar to many other names like Aria, Alba, Alma, Ayla, Leah.
