Eliza or Florence?

Eliza with Elle or Ellie for short
Florence with Florry (sp?) for short

I like names that can be shortened - so that you can have a formal name for work and an informal name for friends & family.

I like Eliza. And Lizzie for short.

wessexgirl · 28/05/2008 15:21

I love Florence; prefer it shortened as Flossie though.

Sunshinemummy · 28/05/2008 15:22

I like both - but prefer Flo as shorthand for Florence.

JessJess3908 · 28/05/2008 15:23

My nan is flo - she hates it but i love it!

Flossie is really cute wessexgirl. I am toying with the name as I am pregnant again but didn't like Florry as an abbreviation.

I like Florence

Flo or flossie ok as family nicknames but wouldnt like them as the usual name tbh

dizzydixies · 28/05/2008 16:07

enid!! you like something without suggesting Devizes?!?!?

JessJess3908 · 28/05/2008 16:07

Thank you.

Belgo - hello again DP's ex g'friend was Liz so Lizzie is a bit too close for comfort!

Am glad lots of you like flossie. Hadn't really thought of it as nan has always been flo.

Will probably be Eliza Florence... but she may look more like a little Flo.

Or could be boy

dixies

just trying to be subtle

hoxtonchick · 28/05/2008 16:09

my dd is florence. we don't shorten it. i like eliza too though .

dizzydixies · 28/05/2008 16:09

Enid, well done you!

JodieG1 · 28/05/2008 16:10

I love Florence, it was my nan's name and is my dd's middle name.

belgo · 28/05/2008 16:10

How about combining the tow Floella

JessJess3908 · 28/05/2008 16:12

Or Floriza?

OP posts:
belgo · 28/05/2008 16:23

yes go for Floriza

nowwearefour · 28/05/2008 16:24

we have florence as a middle name. i love it but thought it was quite brave back in 2005. i dont actually think it was now!!! great choices....

GreenElizabeth · 28/05/2008 16:26

Well, I love Flora and I quite like Florence, but Florrie sounds like a stuffed toy. Or an old aunt with thick ankles who accidentally wets herself. Hang on. That was MY great aunt.

Flora/Florence is lovely though.

Eliza is gorgeous. I wouldn't shorten it to Ellie. I'll rank them.

Flora
Eliza
Ellie
Florrie

JessJess3908 · 28/05/2008 16:33

I like flora too - but am put off by the "spreads easily" comments she might get when she's older

OP posts:
GreenElizabeth · 28/05/2008 17:05

I looked on the lids of tubs of Flora recently and it doesn't say that. It is all omega 3 and low salt or buttery flavour or lower fat flora. NOTHING about spreading easily. I think that that is now assumed.

belgo · 28/05/2008 17:06

I think the spreads easily joke is very dated.

JessJess3908 · 30/05/2008 21:11

Ta for all your suggestions x

Flora and Flossie are really growing on me and DP. Now i whish i was having twin girls, Florence & Eliza.

Would it be a shame to 'waste' Florence as a middle name just because Eliza Florence goes better than Florence Eliza? What would i do if i had a second girl and had used up my 2 fave names?

And can anybody come up with boy's names that are just as lovely???

The name or the city? Me and DP are not remotely Italian but I have 3 Florences in the (only my nan still living) so I do feel entitled to use it. Also have 2 Eliza's on the family tree. Isn't it wierd how we go back to family names when push comes to push?

elkiedee · 30/05/2008 21:28

I was going to call my baby Eliza if he'd been a girl. But I would probably have called her Elizabeth and used Eliza as a short form.
