How popular is Sidney for a boy?

I love the name but I’m wondering how actually popular it is. Do people know many young boys or girls with the name?

My first child’s name is slowly moving up the top 100, I don’t want to pick a popular name again.

thank you

It was 220th in the newly released 2024 data for England and Wales, with 224 registered (down 21 places).

This spelling only has 30 registrations for girls in 2024, so way down outside the top 1,000. The Sydney spelling was 355th for girls, with 124 registrations (up 45 places).

So not overly popular at all. It seemed to be rising for girls but I wouldn't be alarmed by a rise of 45 places as, that far down the charts, that's only a rise of 20 or so registrations. Names tend to move up and down more dramatically the further down the charts you go.

I like the shortening Sid for a boy, it's quite cool. Up there with Ted, Seb, Stan etc.

Personally I don't know any young males called Sidney (two females called Sydney, who are 7 and late teens respectively).

Sidney is handsome and well known but not trendy.
I know one teenager on TV.

If you open the 2024 spreadsheet and click on tab 6 it shows you every name registered 3 or more times:-

Sid is fine @MarsMama17 , but be prepared for some posters to say they don't like it, probably because they don't know any.

Babies called Sidney in England & Wales since 1996 (not updated for 2024 figures at the time of posting)

My friend is pregnant with a baby who they are calling Sidney …

Cheesecrunch · 02/08/2025 15:52

I have a Sid (not Sidney) who’s a teen now. No one else seems to be called it around us. It is the name of Kelly Osborne’s young son though, named after her partner so it might climb in popularity a bit now.

Tomatocutwithazigzagedge · 02/08/2025 16:12

I know one. My lad. 😅

LucasBuck · 02/08/2025 18:09

Sidney is fine - it’s not my personal taste (as I like more classic rather than retro names) but he’ll fit right in with all the Albert’s, Stanley’s etc at nursery. I don’t know any personally - the go-to “old man” name for toddlers where I am seems to be Lenny/Lennie/Leonard.

Mumofgirls2017 · 02/08/2025 23:08

Know one toddler and one dog called Sidney. I love it!

@BoleynMemories13 Thankyou I will check that out today 😊 xx

@Cheesecrunch ahh I hadn’t seen that she called her son that name. Will have to keep an eye out to see if starts becoming more popular thank you xx

@LucasBuck This is actually really interesting as I never realised that Sidney is part of the retro names, as I’ve never met another Sidney before. I think maybe retro names are my style!
