It would be short for Susanna or Susannah - not sure which spelling I prefer.

i have a family member called Susanna…… we call her Susie. also a friend called Susan also called Susie. Both are lovely

MagnificentBastard · 02/08/2025 19:42

Seriously? I can’t see that name being due a comeback ever. It’s in the same group as Sharon, Tracy, Karen, Linda… Not good.

Pieceofpurplesky · 02/08/2025 19:46

It's OK. I currently teach a Susannah and it suits her.

Personally, I am put off by a girl I went to school with was Susie and was really mean. She also had a lisp and was a bit like Violet Elizabeth Bott and would stamp her foot if we wouldn't do what she asked us to (it was in infants, I am sure she has changed now we are in our 50s!)

LancashireButterPie · 03/08/2025 14:02

I'm not young enough to find it hip.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 03/08/2025 14:29

I would go with the Susannah spelling. It’s a great name. I also like Zannah as a nickname (as well as Susie which I would be more inclined to spell Suzy)

TempsPerdu · 03/08/2025 14:38

Susan still feels quite dated and a bit prim and dowdy to me. But Susanna (or Susannah) is lovely - the extra few letters really make a difference I think! Susie is cute but I think if I went with Susanna I’d opt for a slightly more contemporary nickname, like Zanna/Sanna or Suki.

Just looked it up on the most recent ONS stats and there were only 10 Susannahs and 9 Susannas last year (plus 12 Susan’s) - criminally underused IMO!

Viviennemary · 03/08/2025 14:41

That sounds very nice.

You misunderstood me. My Mum chooses to go by Sue because she detests Susan/Susie.

For what it's worth though, the names are all closely linked. So no, it's not 'Sue' but it's a bit like how people say "I don't like Izzy so we've ruled out Isabelle", or "I love Olivia but hate Liv/Livie". Nicknames do need to considered. Susie in itself will be a nickname if she's Susannah on the birth certificate but she probably won't be Susie forever. I can't imagine people will call her Sue as a young child, no, because Sue is quite a grown up sound. Sue is pretty inevitable as an adult though.

No it's not. My name is Susie and no-one ever calls me Sue.

floppybit · 03/08/2025 22:08

I love Susie, so cute!!

Thanks for that insight Sue 😉 See, there's a first time for everything.

HarrietofFire · 03/08/2025 22:21

This is the third planned Susie I’ve heard this month so he prepared for it being unexpectedly popular

JamesMacGill · 03/08/2025 22:24

Novanonplus · 01/08/2025 18:08

Just no. It’s so dated

I agree. I have a dated name and I absolutely hate it. My mum says it’s ’so lovely and a classic’. Your daughter will want to fit in and have a name that doesn’t make her cringe when she gives it to boys. Please don’t!

EmotionallyWeird · 05/08/2025 22:09

I quite like the name Susan but I don't think it's due a revival yet. However, the OP was asking about Susanna(h), which is a very different kettle of fish. I agree with the person who said it's never been popular enough to be strongly associated with any one age group. I like it and I think I slightly prefer the Susanna spelling by really I like both.

For what it's worth, I've only ever met one Susannah who went by Sue, and that was her own choice, and a definite act of rebellion as her family used to call her Susannah in full. Most Susannahs I've known, and a few Suzannes, seem to choose Susie.

Fairyvocals · 05/08/2025 22:29

I love Susanna/Suzannah/Susannah. It’s a classic, and Susie is a sweet diminutive.

Firebird83 · 06/08/2025 00:00

Thanks! Lots of positive responses. Is Susannah the usual spelling in the UK then? I thought it would be Susanna like Susanna Shakespeare.

Susannah traditionally. Susanna is fine. Suzannah is not OK.

SallySummerPop · 06/08/2025 16:22

Love it and love Susannah with a h

Bramble25 · 06/08/2025 20:02

Lovely. And I’d do with a ‘h’ personally .
