Poor Winfred! It makes me think of a bookies.
There's Wynford too.

WaltzingWaters · 30/07/2025 14:44

Sorry but I think it’s terribly old fashioned, but not in a nice way. Sounds very frumpy.

LucasBuck · 30/07/2025 23:26

While neither is my personal taste, I’d prefer to be Winifred of the two, definitely (Winnie alone has too much teasing possibility imo). But I’d go for something more contemporary/popular for the middle name rather than another retro sounding name (for balance). Something like Winifred Lily sounds very pretty or Winifred Isabella if you prefer something longer.

I know two horses with this name and can't look past that, sorry!

Hazelmaybe · 31/07/2025 13:32

Winifred Elsie

I really think there are too many ways Winnie can go wrong (Winnie the poo(h), whiney winnie etc) and Winifred is super frumpy.

I'd go Winona or Winter or Gwyneth and use 'Win' for a nn out and Winnie just at home.

I like Freddy for a girl, so might go Winifred if I was looking to use Freddy all the time.

My daughter gets called wynnie outside the home. Nothing wrong with it. I obviously call her wynter more though

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 01/08/2025 21:05

Maybe Gwendoline? Or Olwen?

But otherwise Winifred - Winnie is to nicknamey although it is very cute

LuckyHare · 02/08/2025 05:15

I would say just Winnie, or could it be short for Guinevere?

BabyCatFace · 02/08/2025 06:06

Don't do it. Winifred is my mum's name, she was named after her auntie Winnie and it was old fashioned when she was a child in the 50s and has never been fashionable since!

It also doesn't work with either another old lady middle name (Winifred Elsie?!) or a modern one (Winifred Lily) both sound wrong.

Linenpickle · 02/08/2025 06:35

Pooh and witch… nope

My ( older) friend is Winifred, known as fred or more usually Freddie

I like Freddie for Winifred too!

I also like it short for Federica! Or Frederika etc ...

But Winnie is also cute. It's a good old name that is genuinely underused imo.

That's an interesting thought.

Winifred would have been old-fashioned in the 50s for sure. It's only recently come back into fashion. Elsie is a very popular baby name - it's come into the top 10 in 2025. Neither are considered old ladies' names any more. (And Lily came back into fashion earlier, I guess late 90s? But when I was little was also an old lady's name!) It all goes round in circles.

ShoeeMcfee · 02/08/2025 15:50

My next door neighbour is Winnie - she has a miserable parrot and she goes to bingo every week.

I’m in Ireland and have only ever heard the name Winnie being used by the traveller community.

Edited

or describing their horses noise when recognising them

RobertaFirmino · 03/08/2025 11:55

It's awful. Shortened or in full. Some names should stay in the past. Also, winnits.

TheSandgroper · 06/08/2025 16:50

Winifred Margaret.

Winnies going back generations here in Ireland. Not a traveller in sight.

Purplecatshopaholic · 06/08/2025 16:59

Awful name. Serious frumpsville. See also Elsie, Edith, Mabel, etc….

nellietheellie75 · 06/08/2025 17:07

It's a horrible name. Sorry

TTCfirstbabyx · 15/08/2025 22:23

It's super cute- I'm considering it myself xx
