I will freely admit I wanted mildly unusual names - because I've got one; but actually my main priority apart from that was finding names that would would still work if my daughters looked like Ann Widdicome and/or were highly respected nuclear physicists.

DS1's name is not in the top 100, though his middle name is (it's a family name on both sides).

DS2's name is in the top 10, and his middle name hasn't been in the top 100 in the last two years.

We chose them because we liked them, not because we wanted to please anyone or stop them rolling their eyes. Whoever it was who thinks popular names are dull, maybe you'd only roll one eye?

My dad and all his siblings have/had double-barrelled forenames, all in Spanish, of course as their parents were Mexican.

Their mother chose them all out of romance novels she had read and they are all very romantic names indeed!

WendyWeber · 27/05/2008 20:56

She said your ds2 has a manly, handsome name, expat

expatinscotland · 27/05/2008 20:57

No, DD2's forename is the Gaelic for Rose, after DH's beloved Nana.

misdee · 27/05/2008 20:57

maybe i can be more adventrous with frogmella.

hunkermunker · 27/05/2008 20:58

I figured you meant me, Hatrick

And thank you, yes, he does (although I am for no good reason I can determine shortening him to Jimmer atm ).

wendy! that is the most lovely fact. ivanhoe.

eekamoose · 27/05/2008 21:10

I think its impossible to be original nowadays unless you opt for names from 20 or 30 years ago. No-one calls their children Susan or David or Jane or John now do they?

But there are thousands named Ruby, Dorothy, Matilda, Frank, Henry, Harry, George - all names our parents mostly wouldn't have considered for us!

Sorry Hatrick, but I know several Theas, Saskias, and even two Kittys.

My dcs have incredibly common names for their era, as do me and DH. I am close friends with two other women with the same name as me. There are at least five people on my phone with the same name as DH. I know 5 Claires and 5 Kates.

Its just the way it is.

misdee · 27/05/2008 21:12

I know a baby girl called Sarah. now that is unusual as most of the sarah's i know were born in the 70's/80's.

WendyWeber · 27/05/2008 21:37

Are you a Leics lass, fishie?

Or the mother of an Ivanhoe? (Or an Emile???)
