If you had to have one of those names yourself, OP, which one would you choose?

Leaveswoods · 23/07/2025 22:11

I always used to ask if I would be happy being called any of the names I was considering.

Aurora or Gaia maybe.
Hettie/Hattie cute

Moreteaandchocolate · 23/07/2025 22:23

Alice is my favourite girls name! Love it!

Henrietta is nice too and I like pp idea of Etta for short.

Gaia is quite nice but the mispronunciation of Gay-a puts me off a bit (it’s the kind of thing that could stick in secondary school)

Athena and Aurora feel a bit princessy for my taste

Larissa I’m not keen on - a bit fussy sounding - and I can’t think of a nice shortening

Lanternsarenice · 23/07/2025 22:27

I like Larissa, Athena and Aurora.

novadaisy · 23/07/2025 22:30

They’re nice—simple and memorable

Larissa is Russian in origin, the traditional diminutive there is Lara but I think you’d have the devils own job making that work in the UK. I knew a Carissa who went by “Rissa” possibly not entirely out of choice, suspect a Larissa would have the same.

Henrietta (Hetty for short)- Chalet Girl/Mallory Towers or a pet chicken
Larissa - exotic beautiful Eastern European/Dr Zhivago
Athena- Greek Goddess/strong Amazonian woman
Alice- In Wonderland (but really just a classic, though I wish the medieval Alys spelling was more popular)
Aurora- Greek Goddess/Sleeping Beauty
Gaia- modern Italian girl/feisty, slightly hippy type.

My favourite is Gaia (so underused in the UK), but Athena and Larissa are lovely too. Least favourite is definitely Henrietta, although Aurora can sometimes feel a bit frilly as well (depends on the girl). No strong feelings on Alice - which could be a good reason for choosing a classic.

I always ask myself, with these Qs, what would I be happy to have as my name as an adult woman.

The only one on your list is Alice, and even then, it's only okay.

If my parents had called me any of the other names I'd change my name when I was I old enough.

Zov · 23/07/2025 20:32

I don't like any of them. (Sorry.) At a push - out of all those - I would pick Henrietta, as I like the shortened version (Hettie.)

Agreed except I prefer Hattie, as short for Henrietta like my cousin -( it just stuck )

needNC · 24/07/2025 00:52

Athena or Alice are my favourite choices

Backhometothenorth · 24/07/2025 00:55

Love Athene rather than Athena

miniaturepixieonacid · 24/07/2025 00:58

Henrietta (Hetty for short) - posh but I quite like it.
Larissa - very pretty, I've only ever met one. Also quite posh.
Athena - ditto to Larissa. It's pretty and I've only ever met one.
Alice - nice enough but seems a bit 'boring' compared to your other choices.
Aurora - a bit princessy but I do really like it and also like Rory as a nn for a girl.
Gaia - I've never known this on a British person. I think I'd assume Spanish/Spanish speaking country (but that could be wrong!) Quite like it though.

mathanxiety · 24/07/2025 02:22

I like Alice, Henrietta, and Athena from your list

Eenameenadeeka · 24/07/2025 02:24

Alice is the best I think

Threewordname · 24/07/2025 02:33

Don’t like Athena or Aurora. Like the others.

NightPuffins · 24/07/2025 03:22

Henrietta - I don’t like this one, just feels like you were expecting a boy called Henry and switched it to a girl.

Larissa - I adore this name, have done ever since I saw Dr Zhivago. Lara for short of course.

Athena - I like this.

Alice - Also like this one.

Aurora - I really want to like this name because I love what it means, and it looks pretty when written. But I dislike how it sounds when spoken. I feel like I’m a dog growling when I say it.

Gaia - I do like this too.

Trishyb10 · 24/07/2025 18:25

The more unusual names they will hate you for as they,l go thru life being asked to repeat it and spell it, x

Henrietta- I love, Hetty is really cute too.
Larissa- Sounds too American for my tastes.
Athena- Lovely, met so many but I wouldn’t use it.
Alice- Pretty, simple and due a comeback imo, maybe as a middle name.
Gaia- I don’t love this one.
Aurora- Too Disney coded for me.

PurpleChrayn · 24/07/2025 18:32

Alice is nice. The others are a bit flimsy.

BoleynMemories13 · 24/07/2025 21:53

I only like Alice. The others are far from my style. Alice is lovely though. Classic, elegant and timeless.

Woofie7 · 24/07/2025 22:39

All lovely and on my lists . Especially Henrietta and Aurora .

user1492757084 · 26/07/2025 03:38
