Leonore, Annika, Amara

I posted yesterday about some names I thought were cute but were unsure about. As I said in that post, I'm very fickle when it comes to names!! I've since been reflecting on some names that I used to love in the past. I feel like they are way more interesting than the ones I posted yesterday.

Strong and distinctive but also pretty.

Leonore is my favourite.

I've loved Annika (pronouced ANN-i-kuh) since I was child, because of Pippi Longstocking. I think it sounds lovely but maybe isn't as nice written down?

Amara is very soulful to me. I go through phases of loving it and being unsure about it, but right now I like it. I think it would suit someone with dark hair.

What do you think?

I don't like how Annika looks, I agree. Amara seems trendy.

I love Leonore, I would go with that.

Moreteaandchocolate · 21/07/2025 16:57

I like Leonore but is it said the same as the fabric conditioner (Lenor?) I prefer Leonora, Leonie, Leona, Eleanora etc for that reason. Leonie is one of my favourite names (I like it said LAY-uh-nee).

Amara is gorgeous, love it!

Annika is quite nice too and she has the option of being Annie if she likes.

Makingpeace · 21/07/2025 16:59

Leonore makes me think fabric softener.

How about Loretta? Kind of somewhere between Leonore and Annika.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 21/07/2025 17:06

Leonore - prefer Eleanor
Annika - prefer Annie or Anna.
Amara - prefer Tamara

I would pronounce it Lee-oh-nore :)

Definitely Leonore. It is so graceful, it has poise, class and will carry your child anywhere in life. Even ending it with an a as in Leonora. She will grow into her name!

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 21/07/2025 17:26

Annika or Amara.

Spindrifts · 21/07/2025 17:26

Leonore is nice if the emphasis is on the 'nore' but with the added 'a' it ends with a flourish. Just wish that was my name.

ScruffMuffin · 21/07/2025 17:59

Amara 😍

Krytococker · 21/07/2025 21:54

Leonore is beautiful. I also love Leontine (which I recently heard as it is the name of one of the characters in The Empress on Netflix).

Bellevue85 · 22/07/2025 10:27

I know an Amara and she’s so lovely (and has dark hair). I love Annika too.

I like Leonore as well, but also Leonie or Nora.

I’d wait until you meet her and make the final decision then. You can’t go wrong with either of them!

Anneke can be spelt the Dutch way if you dislike the spelling, Annika.

Anneke can be spelt the Dutch way if you dislike the spelling, Annika.

It might be better to use the spelling Anneka. I think Anneke might get Ann-eek in the UK, and Annika Ann-eek-a.

mathanxiety · 22/07/2025 20:25

I absolutely adore Leonore.

Annika sounds quite dated to my ear, and Amara is very wishy-washy, imo.

Yes to this.

timoteigirl · 22/07/2025 21:00

Leonore is a royal princess somewhere in Europe.

I like Annika but find it very late 60s/ early 70s name the same as Mia. What about Marika?

Annika is more ordinary and Leonore is more timeless and classic.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 22/07/2025 21:02

Leonor, Princess of Asturias - Wikipedia
Note the spelling

AhBiscuits · 22/07/2025 21:03

DS was going to be Annika (Anni) if he'd been a girl. Bit sad I won't get to use it as I love it.

Enko · 22/07/2025 21:10

I love Annika and like the spelling too. Its nicely different while not unique and a "she is called what?"

The other two are nice names but to me very normal and common.

Also the Astrid Lindgren slant is just amazing. (Though I was more into Emil fra Lønnebjerg)

miniaturepixieonacid · 23/07/2025 03:18

I don't like Leonore, I find it quite harsh. I prefer Leona, Leonora or Leonie.

Annika is lovely. The only one I ever knew spelled it Anika. Then there was Challenge Anneka which I used to love.

Amara is pretty. But it blends in with Amina, Amira, Amaya and it becomes hard to tell the difference (like Layla/Lyla/Leela and Mia/Maia/Maya/Mina/Mira)

I actually love the Anneke spelling and have a Dutch name myself! Thank you

i prefer Annika of those. It’s lovely.

KayEmAy · 23/07/2025 19:00

Annika has been a long time favorite :)

TheeNotoriousPIG · 23/07/2025 20:56

Rather unhelpfully, I like them all! Leonor/e/a sounds very elegant, and certainly a name that will suit an adult and a child. One Leonor that I've heard of goes by the nickname of Leo (but pronounced Lay-o).

I've never met an Annika in person, but there are several in books.

I've met a few Amaras (with spelling variations), mainly of Pakistani origin, and it is a beautiful name.
