I know it's not the most popular but is it unusable?

Why not! I like Saff as a shortening. I met a preschool Crystal the other day so 🤷‍♀️

Shar270 · 18/07/2025 10:27

I really like Saffie, but I'd go for Saffron over Sapphire. Sapphire sounds a bit like a stripper name to me.

Shnuzzbucket · 18/07/2025 10:27

This is how you find out if a name is usable

  1. do you like it - yes, move to 2

  2. does it have a different meaning even though it sounds nice, like Chlamydia - no, move to 3

  3. with your surname is it a stupid one - no, move to 4

  4. what do the initials spell - nothing stupid ? use it

ChocolateGanache · 18/07/2025 10:30

I’d go Saffron
Saphire is a bit chintzy IMO.

Nailed it

Charlottejbt · 18/07/2025 10:35

I would be worried it sounded like sapphism/ sapphic etc. Luckily school bullies have tiny vocabularies. It is a pretty name though.

LucasBuck · 18/07/2025 10:35

On principle it should be - after all, if you can have Ruby, Amber, Pearl, Emerald…but realistically I think it’s a bit like Crystal - very pretty but there’s always going to be some people who think “stripper” with Sapphire. I think once I’d heard it on a child, I would just associate it with them iykwik? but yes, on first hearing the name randomly it is a bit exotic dancer. Where as similar Saffron “Saffy”, just has faint hippy vibes instead.

thornbury · 18/07/2025 10:41

I've taught a Sapphire, back in around 2003. She was of African heritage. Fabulous kid, I hope she's doing something wonderful now (aged about 30!)

bellocchild · 18/07/2025 10:46

I taught a Sapphira once - lovely girl, lovely name. The 'a' makes all the difference.

JDM625 · 18/07/2025 10:50

I do like less common names, but not 100% sold on Sapphire. Sapphira I like though.

In my head- I says Saf-fire, but I've also heard it Saffiyah (more similar to Sophia). I'm not sure if I've explained that clearly though. Its possibly a regional pronunciation but might be annoying have 2 ways to say it.

SaintGermain · 18/07/2025 11:04

It was good enough for Joanna Lumley!

I know a a Sapphire, it suits her as she very attractive.

Moreteaandchocolate · 18/07/2025 11:11

It’s one of those names that I don’t mind on others but would hate to be called myself. I’d exclusively go by Saffy and avoid mentioning my full name whenever possible!

Emanwenym · 18/07/2025 11:14

It's a bit of a name that would stand out or would suit an elegant cat, but if you like it, I can't see a reason not to use it.

Saffiyah is an unrelated name.

Sassybooklover · 18/07/2025 11:17

I like the name in principle. However, on a practical level, it does sound like a name someone in the adult entertainment industry would pick. She'd likely be called Saffie, for short, do you like it? Or go for Sapphira instead, it doesn't have the same association. Or even Saffron.

DameEdnaAverage2 · 18/07/2025 11:22

I recently had a lovely medical consultant called sapphire, so clearly far removed from the stripper connotation.

caringcarer · 18/07/2025 11:22

A pretty name. If you like it use it.

DustlandFairytaleBeginning · 18/07/2025 11:36

It's a pretty name- if I imagine a black lady named Sapphire I imagine a very beautiful elegant woman, whereas if I imagine a white lady named Sapphire I do think of strippers. I think because for white women it feels like they are less likely to have been given the name genuinely, so it feels like it would be a persona for them. So surprisingly I think my answer would depend on the race of the child being named. When I think of Sapphires I have a connotation of rich dark colour in my head.

applegingermint · 18/07/2025 11:39

I know, strangely, two mid 30s white British women called Sapphire. It’s a pretty name and both ladies have very respectable professional careers. I wouldn’t personally think it’s a stripper name!

BarnacleBeasley · 18/07/2025 11:42

I am just thinking of Joanna Lumley with a pudding-bowl haircut and blue eyeshadow. But I also find Saffron a bit embarrassing, as it's Edina's daughter's name in Absolutely Fabulous, and was clearly chosen as a pisstake of a middle-class wannabe hippy name at the time.

Isnt that a car?

Emanwenym · 18/07/2025 18:51

The car was Zafira.

user2848502016 · 18/07/2025 19:02

Ooh actually I like it! And I usually prefer more classic names.
Could be shortened to Saff/Saffy which is pretty

ChocolateGanache · 20/07/2025 12:38

I know someone why has just called their baby this. Can only think of the car 🙈😂

PaLilli60 · 20/07/2025 23:17

Sapphire does sound like a stripper name. What about Seraphina? Similar sounds but I think more sophisticated

ninjahamster · 20/07/2025 23:20

It’s my niece’s middle name. I like it.
