Is Finn ok on its own? Or is it too nicknamey like Ben/Tom/Sam etc..?

Sorry for all the posts, my best friend and I are both pregnant with boys and it's all we've talked about today!!

I like Finbar too but DH put me off when he said it sounds like a place that fish go to get drunk.

I have to say am not a huge fan of Finbar, I know of a Finton too but if it was me and I wanted a longer version I'd go with Finlay nn Finn

wessexgirl · 28/05/2008 10:02

I really like Finn just as it is. I know a Finbar but it just reminds me of 'Finbar Saunders and his Double Entendres' from Viz comic in the 80s, if anyone remembers that.

Fionn should be prenounced Finn but has gradually become fee-un.
I love the name Finn!

mumoftwo37 · 28/05/2008 10:07

I love it - my nephew is Finlay and is gorgeous. It is becoming more and more popular now though.

Fe-un is the english pronounciation, finn the Irish. We had always been taught finn mccool (Fionn mac Cumhaill)
It's the same name and means white or bright. Usually though if someone spells their childs name Fionn I would pronounce it fe-un.

oh pants

at least most of our correspondance is done via facebook and emails as we're far away from each other - maybe I haven't offended her to much

As a mother of a Finbar (who yesterday said he wanted to always be called Finn - though it was a passing fancy!) what can I say?

Fantastic name!

(Though personally, I did not want a Finn on its own or a Finlay etc as I aim for unusual names, hence Finbar).

pmsl @ salmon of knowledge!

stepfordwife · 28/05/2008 10:28

ds2 is called finbar which i love (obviously!)
most people shorten it to finn which he thinks is cool
i like it, too, but prefer finbar

oopsadaisyangel · 28/05/2008 11:10

Great name - we named DS2 Finn and it was perfect for him!

Think we're going with Harry is DC3 is a boy!

GreenElizabeth · 28/05/2008 16:29

I like it but I would put Fintan or Finbar on the bc. I also love Fionn. Fyunn. Not fee-on. Fyun.
Is that too gaelic outside Scotland and Ireland?

Pen74 · 28/05/2008 16:34

Finn is the best on your list. I would put Finlay on the bc as I find Finbar and Fintan do not flow very well.

Jackamolsmum · 28/05/2008 21:13

I like it but round here (in Essex) would sound like a local saying 'thin' LOL
