I've loved the name Hedy for a long time, because of Hedy Lamarr, but I do think Hedy is best suited to a nickname. Hedwig I love but I am not German, however I am from Devon (not quite Cornwall) and came across the name Hedra, a Cornish name.

What do people think of Hedra (nn Hedy)?

Hedra is Cornish for October.

Might make a good middle name for a child born in that month.

I was almost called Hedwig, and I would never have forgiven my mother! Hedy short for Hester would be better. Or Heidi?

No. Massive risk of being bullied with name being shortened to Head. Would be really horrible.

I admire Hedy Lamarr too but I just can’t see Hedy or Hedwig or even Hedra working well once a girl reaches senior school age - younger kids shouldn’t tease and older ones might not bother for commonplace names like William (Willy) or Charlotte (Harlot) etc the way they might have years ago - but I still think anything “head” for a first name is a risk at your average comp.

Could you use Hedwig or Hedra for the middle name spot? You can still call her Hedy, but then she’ll have more of a choice whether to still go with it once she’s older.
Or go for something more commonplace starting with a H like Harriet and just call her Hedy? Maybe even with something starting with a D for the middle name so her initials are H.D?
