Hedra

I've loved the name Hedy for a long time, because of Hedy Lamarr, but I do think Hedy is best suited to a nickname. Hedwig I love but I am not German, however I am from Devon (not quite Cornwall) and came across the name Hedra, a Cornish name.

What do people think of Hedra (nn Hedy)?

In Greek it means the face of a geometric solid.
Not keen.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 16/07/2025 17:56

Bloody hell no

Edwina? If you can get Ned from Edward I can’t see why you can’t get Hed(y) from Edwina

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 16/07/2025 17:57

It makes me think of Single White Female but I don’t hate it.

WholeHog · 16/07/2025 17:59

Better as a middle name: Polly Hedra.

DiscoNights · 16/07/2025 18:13

I like it. But I did misread it as Hendra initially (campsite in Cornwall).

Moreteaandchocolate · 16/07/2025 18:24

I’m not keen, sorry. A name that shortens to “Head” has teasing potential for secondary school.

Michele09 · 16/07/2025 18:26

I first thought of Hydra the Greek serpentine.

RaininSummer · 16/07/2025 18:28

Not too keen on that and also thought hydra.

ninjahamster · 16/07/2025 18:30

Sounds like a nit treatment.

FrogFrogFrog · 16/07/2025 18:30

I first thought of Hydra too.

What about Hester, nn Hedy?

LittleGreenDuck · 16/07/2025 18:52

I actually quite like it. Not sure about Hedy, but Hedra is nice.

Chersfrozenface · 16/07/2025 18:56

Hedra is Cornish for October.

Might make a good middle name for a child born in that month.

Needlenardlenoo · 16/07/2025 18:59

Hedy Lamarr's original name was Hedwig.

Edited: which you know, sorry!

That makes me think of owls!

Ketzele · 16/07/2025 19:18

I was almost called Hedwig, and I would never have forgiven my mother! Hedy short for Hester would be better. Or Heidi?

Dandelionsand4leafclover · 16/07/2025 19:30

No. Massive risk of being bullied with name being shortened to Head. Would be really horrible.

Minecroft · 16/07/2025 19:31

Hedrin. Full Marks Mousse.

LucasBuck · 16/07/2025 20:20

I admire Hedy Lamarr too but I just can’t see Hedy or Hedwig or even Hedra working well once a girl reaches senior school age - younger kids shouldn’t tease and older ones might not bother for commonplace names like William (Willy) or Charlotte (Harlot) etc the way they might have years ago - but I still think anything “head” for a first name is a risk at your average comp.

Could you use Hedwig or Hedra for the middle name spot? You can still call her Hedy, but then she’ll have more of a choice whether to still go with it once she’s older.
Or go for something more commonplace starting with a H like Harriet and just call her Hedy? Maybe even with something starting with a D for the middle name so her initials are H.D?

bumblecoach · 16/07/2025 20:20

No

AmateurNoun · 16/07/2025 20:26

How about having it as short for Harriet or even Henrietta?

Frostynoman · 16/07/2025 20:29

Think of the nicknames and teasing when they’re a teen..

WholeHog · 16/07/2025 17:59

Better as a middle name: Polly Hedra.

A good, solid, well rounded child indeed. 😀

With many sides to her personality!

AmateurNoun · 16/07/2025 20:33

Or Heather? It could be short for Heather I suppose...

CrushingOnRubies · 16/07/2025 21:29

Not keen. Had to double read as though it was Hendra which is Cornish for Old Farm but beautiful beach.

Jennyathemall · 16/07/2025 21:30

Too close to Hydra for me.
