Elizabeth, shortened to Eliza.

Emanwenym · 15/07/2025 09:01

I wouldn't pick either of them, May as a middle name is both twee and dull. Mae is awful.
The names are so different. Which goes best with the surname?

I prefer Elizabeth to Eliza and Mary to May. Either could be shortened

Both are gorgeous, I can see why you are having a hard time choosing!

At a push I think May is my favourite.

MiddleAgedDread · 15/07/2025 12:07

Eliza is great!

Shenmen · 15/07/2025 12:20

May is a beautiful first name (dull middle name).
Eliza is OK a bit stuffy.

Mcdonaldsbreakfast · 15/07/2025 13:19

Eliza. There are quite a few around.

Definitely not May as a middle name, dull and overused. Every girl has it, or Rose.

Moreteaandchocolate · 15/07/2025 19:09

I like both. I know lots of little Eliza’s and no Mays, so would probably pick May.

CorrectionCentre · 15/07/2025 19:13

May. It has a pure and simple beauty to it. It's a name that's suffered from being used so much as a middle name. It deserves being used as a first name.

Cocktailsandcheese · 15/07/2025 20:38

May is beautiful. Yes there are lots of girls with May as a middle name, or as the second part of a double barrelled name i.e Ellie-May, but there aren't many girls whose name is just May. I think it's lovely.

Eliza on the other hand, I really dislike.

May, no contest. Very pretty, elegant, sweet and simple and surprisingly underused in UK as a first name (seems more popular internationally, especially in some East Asian countries). But because it’s so popular as a middle name at the moment all her peers will still be familiar with it and she’ll fit right in. I’ve never understood why May’s not as popular as Rose and Grace are for a first name (it’s even a flower like Rose!) - so imo get in there quick OP before everyone else catches on 🤣

Eliza…is fine. A bit Victorian scullery maid trend (see Nancy, Elsie, Ivy, Mabel etc etc). Personally I’m less keen on the “lie” sound so prefer very classic Elizabeth.

NotrialNodeal · 15/07/2025 21:22

May is like a filler common middle name, usually spelt Mae. So I would have to pick Eliza.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 15/07/2025 00:18

I like them both - but presumably shes not a May baby, so Eliza

May is a flower so fits in with the floral trend names (Rose, Lily, Daisy, Poppy etc etc) as well as a popular traditional shortening for Mary (and its variants) and Margaret. The month connection is more of a coincidence - it’s not like April or June which don’t have any other meaning. In the past when May as a name was much more popular, the majority wouldn’t have been born in month of May!

Eliza - lovely name, not many around.

There's loads where I live. It's the new Olivia. May is lovely.

Cressie2 · 22/07/2025 21:48

Eliza by miles. It’s elegant.

ArtistOfTheFloatingWorld · 22/07/2025 22:48

Definitely May. I agree Eliza has Victorian scullery maid vibes
