I’m expecting my second baby and second son. I’m also a solo parent, which is great as I get to choose his name. But I’m really stuck with making progress towards a winner from the shortlist (or beyond) and feel like I need some opinions, but I also don’t want to share my short list with friends or family.

I like uncommon yet traditional British names that have a short nickname - but without being too posh or stuffy. My first son is called Wesley, but mostly goes by Wes.

Would love some opinions on these options:

Rupert (Ru)
Wilfred (Wilf)
Herbert (Herb)
Christopher (Kit)
Warren (Ren)
Albert (Bertie)

The middle name is going to be Oliver.

Love Rupert and Albert.

chicke09 · 13/07/2025 21:42

Kit or Ru

Moreteaandchocolate · 13/07/2025 22:07

My favourites are-
Christopher (Kit) and Albert (Bertie, although I would use Albie).

Limonades · 13/07/2025 22:19

I like Christopher and Albert.

Rupert and Herbert are awful imo.

CatchABee · 13/07/2025 22:20

Warren 100% goes with Wesley.
brilliant name
Warren Oliver I like

LucasBuck · 13/07/2025 23:10

I’m also a SMBC! But I admit I did discuss DS’s name with my parents and brother, both to make sure I wasn’t overlooking anything obvious/teasable with the surname but also mainly to get a male perspective as I didn’t want anything “wet” 🙄 or odd that might invite teasing.

I’m afraid the only one of your picks that would likely pass with them would be classic Christopher (Kit). Well, Warren and likely Wilfred would too but you already have a Wes and personally I’m not keen on same initials for same sex siblings as post could be a pain (I share an initial with my brother and quite a few letters were only Mr/Miss Initial.Surname so we had to double check!).

TheDonsDingleberries · 14/07/2025 06:56

I like Rupert, Christopher, and Albert best with Wesley. Warren is nice on its own, but I'm not fond of it with Wes.

When I was growing up my dad would use the phrase 'spotty/greasy Herbert' to describe young men who were a bit of an idiot, or had questionable hygiene, so that's a no from me!

Mumofgirls2017 · 14/07/2025 07:53

Christopher! But also like rupert

user1492757084 · 14/07/2025 08:03

My faves are Rupert and Christopher.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 14/07/2025 13:59

Love Rupert - Ru although I might be inclined to spell it Roo

DuchessOfNarcissex · 14/07/2025 18:50

Rupert (Ru) - Rupert OK, Ru awful
Wilfred (Wilf) - both fine
Herbert (Herb) - Herbert is an insult
Christopher (Kit) - fine
Warren (Ren) - Warren OK-ish but a bit matchy with Wesley, Ren not intuitive and a bit of a stretch.
Albert (Bertie) - not keen

I'd pick Wilf or Kit from your list.

Norastroud · 14/07/2025 20:31

My favourite is Albert, Wes & Bert are great sib set names!

TomatoSandwiches · 14/07/2025 20:34

Love Rupert and Christopher

I'll add Humpfrey as a suggestion.

Theresomethingaboutdairy · 14/07/2025 20:44

The only Warren that I knew went by Waz so Wes and Waz might be a bit much. It’s a tough one as the shortening that you may prefer might not be the one that his friends choose. I like Albert the most but not sure Wesley and Albert go together, is that important though?

Olidora · 15/07/2025 00:24

I only like Kit .

YourChirpyFatball · 15/07/2025 00:27

Waz is short for wazzock is it not. Another insult?

TidyAmberPoster · 15/07/2025 11:59

Love Rupert and Kit. Not too fond of the others

Failingatadulting · 15/07/2025 21:40

Rupert (Ru) - this is so so unexpected popular I'm my area, so many of them at baby and toddler groups or babies with older brothers called Rupert. I like Ru but prefer as a shortening for Rufus or Reuben.

Wilfred (Wilf) - I really like the nn Wilf, but not so keen on Wilfred. I have the same issue with Walt, love Walt, dislike Walter. I'm very much a not using nns as first names person too though.

Herbert (Herb) - I think this would be quite a hard nane to pull off and I'm not sure a child would thank you for it, though I guess he could go by Bertie. For some reason I think 'Herbert the pervert' not sure why. Hubert might be better

Christopher (Kit) - nice enough, a bit trendy atm

Warren (Ren) - i lile Warren alot but not Ren and feel its a bit of a stretch

Albert (Bertie) - lots about but a nice name, though Albie seems to be the popular nn

Surprised Alfred isn't on your list since you like Wilfref and Albert. You could also consider Bertram (Bertie or Bram) seems to fit your style

I love Herbert/Herb.

TheBirdintheCave · 30/08/2025 07:12

I like Rupert, Wilfred and Christopher best from your list.

Herbert and Warren are the only ones I’d call uncommon. The other are all at number 250 or higher in the popularity charts.

My son is Gilbert (nn Gil) which might be up your street as well? :)

ChocoChocoLatte · 30/08/2025 07:13

Love Herb

what about

Gilbert - nn Gil
Arthur - Art
Vince:Vincent
Hugo

timoteigirl · 30/08/2025 07:58

Do you not mind another W name? Wardell

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/08/2025 08:35

I love Christopher/Kit. Well, specifically Kit.
I’m not sure Wilfred is as unusual as you think it is.

falalalalaaaaaaaa · 30/08/2025 14:58

I love Kit. Ru is sweet too. Other suggestions:

Benjamin (Ben)
Casper (Cap)
