DH is obsessed with the came Cassia. What does everyone else think? We had Cassius on our middle names list for DS2 (not brave/cool enough for it as a first name). He has a very specific taste in names which has made naming our boys very difficult, but we are finding naming a girl even harder. I don't think I have a 'style' I just like what I like, I think.

He also likes Cordelia, Maxima and Valeria. I don't hate any of them but they sound a bit pretentious and I'd worry about the judgement of others honestly - we don't live in a particularly 'cool' or affluent area where people use all sorts of unusual names. Children in our son's school are mostly Amelia, Harper, Olivia, Grace, Millie/Lily/Tilly, Oliver, Isaac, Harrison, Harry, Jack, etc.

I like June and Maggie (maybe Magdalena? DH would never go for just Maggie or Margaret). I can't seem to really like any others, which is unhelpful.

Boys names we liked were Magnus, Raphael, Victor, Conrad, Oswin, Bram, Laurence, Leander, Cassius, Aurelius. DH also fought hard for Casimir. I liked Asa.

I prefer Cassie.

Pinkrosesyellowroses · 15/07/2025 22:43

I like Cassia.

I don't mind Cassia, but tbh it doesn't illicit a strong response either way. I prefer Cordelia and Maggie from your OP.

People are exposed to so many different names and styles via the internet these days that I tend to think most established names tend to be accepted, even if it's not a name that's currently popular or trending in a particular area. Plus even if a name seems unusual when you first hear it, it just becomes ordinary after a while once it's in use.

Some names that might bridge the gap:
Adriana
Antonia
Aurora (currently in the top 100)
Cassandra
Cecilia
Claudia
Diana
Flora
Francesca (almost in the top 100 & climbing)
Julia / Juliana
Lucia
Luna (currently in the top 100)
Maia
Marcella (could be Marcie day-to-day)
Mariana
Miranda
Octavia
Rhea
Sabrina
Selena / Selina
Sylvia

Magda is a bit more unexpected than Maggie whilst still being familiar.

Maxine might be more accessible than Maxima due to the character on Stranger Things.

Juno is a bit more out there, but rising in popularity & could be an alternative for June.

The name Cassia, of Greek and Latin origin, primarily means "cinnamon". It is derived from the Greek word "kasia," which refers to the aromatic bark of the cassia tree, also known as cinnamon. The name can also be linked to the Roman family name Cassius, which may be related to the Latin word "cassus," meaning "empty" or "vain".

I like Cassia - it’s pretty and unusual, and Cassie is a lovely day-to-day diminutive that would be absolutely fine at school.

Of the others, I only like Cordelia - but I think there are nicer names in this style.

VeryScary · 16/07/2025 08:52

Cassia is a laxative - it’s the Latin name for senna. I wouldn’t use it for that reason.

Enko · 16/07/2025 22:55

If you feel off about Cassia (I like it a lot) what about Kezia instead?
Or
Allanah
Leilana
Athena

mismomary · 16/07/2025 23:00

No, sounds like a car.

alexdgr8 · 16/07/2025 23:03

Cosima ?

alexdgr8 · 16/07/2025 23:04

Valentina ?

LivingTheDreamish · 22/07/2025 06:04

I love Cassia. How about Cassandra? Also like Magdalena with nn Magda.

Magnir · 22/07/2025 06:12

My first thought was cheap cinnamon substitute

HelloHattie · 22/07/2025 06:17

My niece is Cassia, short for Cassiopeia. I love it.

HappydaysArehere · 22/07/2025 06:43

I like Laurence. However Cassius would worry me as he murdered Caesar and was not a man to be trusted! Laurence of Arabia was a hero. Florence is lovely and there is Florence nightingale of course. I know a Cecilia and she is a lovely person and of course there was the patron saint of music by that name. Yes, I can’t help thinking of associations but you probably don’t so won’t worry. My girts were named after characters in my favourite books so Catherine (Cathy) Wuthering Heights and Jo from Little Women. However, the latter is Joanne as a blend of our names and could still have Jo.
Good luck and hope you choose something you both really like. Whatever you decide there will probably be a nick name that sounds good.

How about Calypso? I think it's a gorgeous girls' name (Greek nymph).

Or Sibylla, is very pretty.

Loathe Cordelia, Maxima and Valeria. Really clunky, and I'd resent my parents if they'd called me any of those names.

ihaveoneofthose · 27/07/2025 20:36

NC to say I have a Cassia so naturally I think your DH has excellent taste.

She is junior school age and loves her name. We have met only one other younger Cassia. Pronunciation has not been a problem at all - usually the mistake by some non native English speakers may be to put the accent over the I instead of the first syllable but that’s it.

I am still really pleased I chose it as her name. Good luck in your name search!

Mailys · 27/07/2025 20:39

I love the name Cassia! But also know a little Cassidy, and think it's such a pretty name

dontcomeatme · 27/07/2025 20:45

I absolutely love Casimir. Reminds me of Cosima from Orphan Black, gorgeous name either spelling.

miniaturepixieonacid · 29/07/2025 13:58

I really like Cassia and, although it is different from the very mainstream names you have listed at your local school, it isn't that out there or hard to pronounce or wildly pretentious. I think it would fit in fine. I'm sure there will be at least a few unusual names in every class, even if they're only ones from other cultures.

Other names that give me the same vibe and could also (imo) fit in with/are currently popular names:
Cassidy, Cassie, Casey, Cara, Clara, Ciara, Carys, Aurora, Alyssa, Alicia/Alyssia, Alexia/Alexa, Alannah, Aria, Ayla, Saskia, Elisa, Elina, Freya, Gabriella, Imogen, India, Julia, Joanna, Kaia, Kayla, Leona, Lydia, Melissa, Matilda, Natasha, Nevaeh, Nia, Nova, Olivia, Phoebe, Pippa, Piper, Rhianna, Ria, Sienna, Sierra, Savannah, Sadie, Thea, Tia, Victoria, Zara

Other names that give me the same vibe but might be too 'out there' to fit in among her peers (not that I personally think it matters all that much):
Cassandra, Calliope, Calista, Camilla, Carmen, Araminta, Arianna, Alayna, Danica, Demelza, Electra, Evadne, Ember, Fenella, Fabia, Francesca, Greta, Giovanna, Hebe, Honor, Inez, Isadora, Iara, Iona, Jacinta, Jessamy, Jocasta, Jemima, Julianna, Juliette, Karensa, Katinka, Keziah, Livia, Liara, Luana, Larissa, Lorelai, Leonie, Lavinia, Miranda, Natalia, Nyah, Octavia, Paria, Pandora, Paloma, Ramona, Rowena, Romilly, Sylvia, Saffron, Sorrel, Sapphire, Samaris, Tamara, Talitha, Tabitha, Vanessa, Xanthe, Xenia, Zeryn, Zelda, Zillah

Kasia is a polish name pronounced Cash-a

Rattai · 29/07/2025 14:23

I know. Got one in the family 😀

SupposesRoses · 29/07/2025 14:50

Cassia is nice.
Perhaps also Callia, Celeste/Celestina, Assia

Aurelia
Aelia
Ariadne/Arianna
Hero
Clio
Thalia
Xanthe
Nerissa
Naia
Sheherazade
Angharad
Thisbe

I know a family with several daughters: Danae, Daphne, Calliope, Niobe, Eurydice

I don't find Harper and Amelia unpretentious, for what it's worth. Perhaps just a different kind of pretentious.

marshmallowfinder · 29/07/2025 14:51

It's a beautiful name. I'd chose Hebe as a middle name.

Lafoosa · 31/07/2025 10:34

Ketziah means Cassia tree, so that could be an option.

my youngest’s middle name is Cassia :)
