Just Lizzie, not Elizabeth

We're having our first baby (a girl). My husband suggested Lizzie as soon as we found out the gender. He has loved it since childhood and has been hoping that I'll officially agree to it. The only "problem" is that he hates the formal name (Elizabeth). (I've noticed that he hates most names that start with the letter E.) To be fair, I'm not too keen on Elizabeth either. I've just been thinking that Lizzie as an official name might look a bit unprofessional to other people, but he doesn't care about what other people think. He's of the opinion that we shouldn't give our child a first name that we dislike just to appease other people. Thoughts?

I have never once applied for a job using my actual name. Why would I -
I have never ever used it.

Only snobs would think less of someone who applied under Bill rather than William. In 2025 it’s archaic.

Presumably you tell them your name if you get the job. Can cause issues with tax and NI. I used to run a payroll and HMRC weren't pleased about it when a staff member did it.

Yes. I still have the name that I use in my CV for when I apply for a job,
not my actual name. It’s not hard.

I think it's fine. No-one cares that it's not the longer name. She will be called Lizzie by everyone. 0.05% of life is official/forms/admin and yes she will be asked if it's Elizabeth, but the vast majority of the time it won't matter. We had a prime minister called Liz (albeit briefly).

Although in defence, Liz Truss is actually called Mary Elizabeth Truss. So there is Elizabeth in there.

Mandarinaduck · 20/06/2025 21:54

It's totally fine. It's a sweet name.

I love the name Lizzie but would always assume it’s short for Elizabeth or similar - Lizette is a lovely name - I know one who goes by Liz.

I personally appreciate having a longer traditional name and have swapped between many shortened variations over the years. Goodluck with your decision!

I was asking if you use it on payroll not your CV. It can cause issues with tax and NI, I've had it happen when someone isn't using their name and eventually it was picked up.

didgeridid · 21/06/2025 06:12

Mine, my husband, his two brothers and our son all have the shorter version of names. I think it's actually only myself and husband where people question it.
I think Lizzie is lovely :)

BCBird · 21/06/2025 06:15

Of course you should not give them a name you dislike but equally don't give them a name they have to explain all the time.

And I answered yes. It’s the first word of my post!

I love Lizzie! Go for it.

If lizzie is what you both like then use it.
It is ridiculous to put a name on the birth certificate that you don't like and will never use because some people have weird rules about what is and isn't acceptable for a name.

Fuck that. Use the name you love.

First off, why are you assuming that a parent can only ever use one name ? And why work on the assumption that the parent is the only one who will call their child ?

Thomas can be Tommy as a baby but Tom as an older child and Thomas to his employer.

Names also reflect the relationships we have with others and the degree of formality we use. If my name was Elizabeth, I wouldn't mind my mother calling me Lizzie but would not feel comfortable with my employer or other people I'd just met calling me that !

Maxorias · 22/06/2025 18:11

(this said I agree OP shouldn't put a name she doesn't like on the birth certificate, which is why she should pick another name. An actual name, not a cutesy diminutive that will be forever embarrassing).

Highlights12 · 22/06/2025 18:27

I use a shortened version of my official name and don’t get asked if it’s short for it, why would anyone ask except if it was for official reasons. I do like Elizabeth but if you don’t just name her Lizzie

MadisonAvenue · 22/06/2025 18:36

I love it!
Both of our sons have shortened versions of longer names, if we’d given them the long names they would no doubt have been shortened anyway and we didn’t particularly like the longer names anyway.
They've both got to their mid to late 20s with no problems and having what some may perceive to be a nickname certainly hasn’t hindered them professionally as one is an engineer and the other is a secondary school teacher.

I know a Lizhi, pronounced the same as Lizzie. She has Chinese heritage - Lizhi is the word for lychee, but also used as a first name.

Suffolkposy · 22/06/2025 19:47

Lizzie will end up being Liz as she’s older (speaking from personal experience) not many keep Lizzie past 12/13
