What names do you think have lost their charm due to overuse?

For me it’s Emily, I absolutely adored the name as a child. I was born in the early 80s before Emily was popular so it sounded rare back then and had a cute old timey vibe, i named one of my dolls Emily and even as a teen I was sure I wanted to name my future daughter Emily.

Now I’m so glad I didn’t… it’s still a gorgeous name me but it’s obscene popularity in the 90s/00s ruined the timeless feel of the name for me personally. It feels very of an era to me now which is crazy because it felt sooo unique to me as a child. I ended up giving my kids classic names similar to Emily but not as ubiquitous.

Has anyone else got names that they loved but then they got too popular and it ruined the name for them?

Evelyn, Eva, Eve, Evie.

Same. I used t absolutely love Evelyn (and Eva) and saw myself using it for a daughter but it’s just so overused now, especially with the nn Evie

Classic Isabel sadly -especially since the Isabelle spelling is so popular that she’d likely have spelling issues too. I always thought it was pretty and elegant and I admired an older Isabel I knew.

I’ve always loved the look and sound of Ava as well - but it was hardly heard of 30 years ago (except for Ava Gardner which is where I heard the name) and is so well used now that I worry it risks being this generation’s “Karen”.

I’m even hesitant about having Eve on my list, which is a family name for us and one I consider fairly timeless as I know ones of varying ages. The ubiquitousness of Eva/Evelyn/Evie now means I feel “the original” Eve gets lumped in with them.

Luckily I like very classic names for boys and most of them are slipping down the charts as everyone seems to like nicknames or surnames for boys or newly popular Leo, Noah type ones. So pretty happy about that 😀

My whole dds class is like it. I quite like the names but they've all just started to sound the same!

Edited to say of course Olivia and Amelia come this category also. How could I forget them!

I’d rather a classic and beautiful name that’s popular than a “unique” name that’s horrible.

Yes agree. I think people who’ve gone out of their way to choose something clearly wacky and ‘unique’ looks a bit desparate to be cool. And if you’re desperate to be cool, you are not.

This thread is very odd. I’m not sure why these classic, timeless names are being slagged off. I guess you can’t win either way on MN—whether you have an Arthur or a Jadyn. 🤷‍♀️

No, there are many names in-between. I think most of the above are just over used. They'll soon go out of fashion, but will come round again like all names.

MinPinSins · 20/06/2025 08:00

Fortunately anyone who might be upset if their child's name was called charmless can choose not to open the thread.

You don't have to spend long on Mumsnet to realise how thin skinned some people are. My son's name is regularly ripped apart here. It's not a big deal.

CeeJay81 · 20/06/2025 08:03

This could happen to any name. I love my dds name. It's always been a bit of an in-between name, never really popular but well known and fairly traditional. However one day it could become the next Olivia, Amelia, Ava, Poppy etc. Who knows what names will suddenly become in fashion? I'd rather someone has a popular classic name than a made up one, or a made spelling of one, or something a bit crazy. Which is increasingly common these days.

WhatterySquash · 20/06/2025 08:13

I feel exactly like the OP but about Eve (Eva/Evie). I always loved it and in my 20s I thought I’d name a baby girl Eve - it sounded so unusual and original and cool at the time! (That’s 30 years ago!) I do still like it but it’s just everywhere now and I wouldn’t want to use a name that means you’re one of 5 in the class. (I know some people actively prefer popular names but the unusualness was what made me want to use it.) Gave DD a different, more unusual name but it is now gradually gaining popularity.

My own name was unusual when I was growing up but there was a trend for it about 10-20 years ago and I was constantly hearing my name yelled in supermarkets and parks and looking over my shoulder.

Shortcutsgalore · 20/06/2025 08:13

Every boy is called James.

EffinMagicFairy · 20/06/2025 08:23

Just remember, what ever name you pick will be on a thread like this in years to come.

None, and I always feel these threads about children are totally snotty.

Steelworks · 20/06/2025 08:40

Teddy
Willow

Only because every child and oodle dog around where I live seemed to be called these names.

CoalTit · 20/06/2025 08:49

I can't believe no-one has said Jessica yet.

I love the names Jessica and Grace and lots of others mentioned here. I wouldn't say they've lost their charm but they got ridiculously popular.

However, the name Lisa was like that for my generation, and now it seems like a good name, easy to pronounce and spell, neither frilly nor severe, allows its owners personality to shine through. So what if it was ridiculously popular for a while?

Carrack · 20/06/2025 09:02

Freya, Frida , Oscar , Nell, Molly …. But actually overall I think this is really mean 😭 But yes Freya….

Do they also have really blonde hair and the mother doesn’t need to work because their hobby business got really successful generational wealth ?

No, they're about names.
