Cousins with the same name

Do you know any examples of this? What is the general consensus?
said name has been a girl name I wanted to use since I was a girl for sentimental reasons. is it now out of bounds?
I am 30 weeks pregnant with a girl and this is consuming me currently. I go from thinking it is no issue to thinking I simply cannot do it.

Girls will have different surnames, nicknames could be use when they are together and they are not likely to be at the same school.

Could you use the name as a middle name?

thiswilloutme · 14/06/2025 23:34

Not a problem in families I know - I have cousins with the same name. It’s the easiest thing in the world to distinguish between them by either adding the last name or if they share a surname you just say “auntie Jean’s David”. Assuming they don’t both have mothers with the same name 😆. I have the same name as my parent’s friend’s dd. 🤷‍♀️ this never used to be an issue.

Jibberty · 14/06/2025 23:50

I really can’t see any issue tbh, but then again I have a brother and cousin with the same name. I have a daughter called Emilia and a niece, Emily, my son is James, my nephew (different sibling) is also James. Mine are older and I couldn’t give a stuff that my siblings chose the same or similar.

One of my DBs, 3 out of 4 sets of cousins and my uncle from the remaining family have the same name. It never caused any confusion.

onceuponatimeinneverland · 15/06/2025 01:07

Yes, in my family two DC of two cousins are called the same name. 2 different genders as well. Each named after the same grandparent. No problem.

Scottyme · 15/06/2025 06:15

I had lots of names I liked but my ex had a massive family and they all had names I liked so I choose something else. I was fine with it as their name, whilst not a name on my dream list, is perfect for them.

user1492757084 · 15/06/2025 09:25

Tricky.
If you can bear to not use the name, find another.
If you really wish to use the same name, it is no crime and easy to live with two XXX in the family.

TheWordWomanIsTaken · 15/06/2025 14:11

I had the same first and surname as my cousin growing up - we never gave it a second thought
Our dads were brothers and we were both named after their mother.

Branleuse · 15/06/2025 14:13

we have this in my family. Actually on both sides.

We would say "Baby David" for the younger one, even as he got bigger.
The other side would say Little George, or Big George, according to who was the oldest.

boysmuminherts · 15/06/2025 14:15

I think it's just plain weird to name cousins the same. How far apart in age and how close though? My aunty did this with my brother's name. He was born in Feb, then my mum's sister names her son THE SAME NAME in July the same year. I have always found that totally bizarre. Of all the names - pick a different one.

bluecurtains14 · 15/06/2025 14:16

One of mine has the same name as her cousin but there is about 25 years between them!

Emanwenym · 15/06/2025 14:25

Presumably the child already named is that of your DH/DP's sibling.

I think it depends on a few things.

If the GPs have only 2 GD,both with the same first name. then No.
If the name is a traditional name and used in your family (e.g. Elizabeth,Margaret) then it might be OK.
If the name is voguish (e.g. Mia, Sienna) then No.

Mischance · 15/06/2025 15:02

Two of my GSs have the same name.

Thank goodness my family are all sane individuals and no-one batted an eyelid.

They are just known as Big A and Little A when they are together.

I have never understood why people make such a fuss about this. Chances are that as the years pass they will not even see each other.

Emanwenym · 15/06/2025 15:36

@Mischance , 2 of my cousins gave their child the same name. It's a name that isn't much used, and can't be shortened or lengthened.

The two are the same age and were in the same year at school. They had different surnames and middle names. They were the only two with the name in the whole school and I only know one other person with that first name.

sheknowsitstoolate · 15/06/2025 15:38

My sons got the same name as my cousin, we don’t see each other tho and I didn’t even remember they had the same name until my dad mentioned it.

feelingbleh · 15/06/2025 15:39

I have cousins with the same name on both side one lot i don't think have even met and on the other side see each other maybe once or twice a year, we just call them big phil and little phil (not real name). If they don't see each other a lot no big deal if their going to be in each other's lives pick a different name

ButterBites · 15/06/2025 15:42

Two of my cousins have my name (to be fair I have many cousins as both my parents had 8 or more siblings). One of my cousin’s daughters also has my name. I was the first in my family with my name.

It’s never bothered me. When we get together every few years or so, I’m known as “Big [Name]”. The middle one is known as “Middle [Name] and so on.

It might have been different if we saw each other regularly but we all live in different countries which has probably helped.

lizzyBennet08 · 15/06/2025 16:41

I wouldn’t honestly . It will look a little odd to call you child the same name as her first cousin.?
distant cousins wouldn’t bother me.

Eenameenadeeka · 16/06/2025 08:23

If it's a family name I'd think it's fine, less so if it just happens to be the same name. I'd personally pick something different and use it as a middle name I think
