I have been trying everything… maybe your expertise could help to come up with names for a brother…

Isn't Nikita a Russian boy's name?

Andrei
Lukas
Ivan
Kasper

I'd absolutely go for what you like and is meaningful to you and your partner. One thing I might change if I named my children again is that my initial is the same as my daughter's and sounds quite similar but I absolutely loved the name we gave her and the meaning behind it.

It is! But I am in Italy and they perceive it like a female name from the movie.

What name did you give her? Whatever name there is… I feel sadness naming my baby with it. So(

Dostoevsky, my neighbours, some classic names put into translate English to Ukrainian.
We have an Oleg, Pyotr, Andreiy, Tadeiy and a Leonid here too.(I might have misspelt the middle ones)

Any slavic names that sound ok to a western ear and are easy to spell will work together with Nikita.
Is the last name also slavic? Because then need a matching slavic name as:
Charles Klitchko - etc would look weird.

If the father has european name - then you have more options, and it’s all about how you feel about a name, if you can relate.

For me - it was important to name my kids with names from my culture, that are not weird to the English speakers.

Not sure Mumsnet is the best place to ask for slavic names - because they’ll be mostly familiar with the most commonly used - Alexander, Nikolai, Michael

This is my biggest problem...I am in Italy and the last name is very Italian, but i kind of like this mix....unfortunately i can't come with the name that i like...Alexander is great but i don't like Sasha, Misha is ok but Mykhail is very oldish, same thing with Victor and Ivan and Nikolai...they don't sound fresh to me...I was thinking of Alexei, Yan, Maxim...but i just can't fall in love with any((((

I agree.
The names I know are the names of adults. Same with italians, apart from the names like Luca and Matteo, which are popular with non-italians.

There's nothing wrong with using a name that is not from the same heritage as the surname IMO if you are from that heritage.

My surname is one that could be from a different language - something like Martin, which could be French or English. Giving a child a very French name when we're not French might mean people would assume that little Ettienne or Pierre were French.

Why don't you pick a name you like regardless of whether 'it works', run it past the father, check it goes with the surname, then ask real italians if they'd be able to say and spell it.

josuk · 12/06/2025 16:46

Luca - also slavic
Matteo - has a slavic version, can use that for nickname
Anton - slavic and almost italian with -io in the end

Mark - not Italian, but international and slavic
Peter …

Good luck - you’ll get there!!

Yes this was my goal with a name for my daughter....It was slavic first of all....i like how it sound with italian surname it is just that i can't find the same slavic name for my son, that would sound fresh and young..it could be Sasha...for Alexander or Alex...but its just everywhere...
