Is it okay to not tell grandparents the full name on child's birth certificate?
I don't want to upset anyone with middle names used.

I would think it v strange if I didn’t get told my grandchild’s full name. Just own your choice and tell them.

Emanwenym · 09/06/2025 12:10

Middle names aren't compulsory and it might be better to not use any if it means upsetting someone.

user1492757084 · 09/06/2025 12:25

Just be proud of your choices.
The baby doesn't need any stigma connected to it's name. Grandparents always get used to names as they learn to adore the child..

Well what is the back story? Why would anyone be upset with names used, have you named after one side, and not the other?

MiddleAgedDread · 09/06/2025 15:19

They're bound to find out eventually.

ChloeCannotCanCan · 09/06/2025 15:20

They will find out eventually- it’s normally best to be upfront about this sort of thing….

BoleynMemories13 · 09/06/2025 16:55

It won't stay a secret forever. Your child will grow up knowing their full name, so you may as well tell grandparents from the off. It's not up for discussion, you're simply informing them. Is baby here yet? If not, just announce the full name at birth. No need for secrecy (which I can only imagine will cause more problems than just being honest).

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 09/06/2025 19:58

I think I would be upset about having something like that kept from me. I would expect that they will find out sometime, like when the child is old enough to say their own name

ShesTheAlbatross · 09/06/2025 20:00

If you’ve used multiple middle names and only tell them one, they won’t ask if there are more so then they probably won’t find out until your child gets married and they hear it at the altar. Which will be nice…

Or the child learns their name and tells them, or you go on holiday and they see the passport, or they want to contribute to savings and need all the details…. many ways they could find out.

Either face up to it, or choose a different name.

KayEmAy · 09/06/2025 20:22

What you tell people about your child is your prerogative, that being said it would be strange to not tell your family. Especially since life will out - they will find out eventually.

If it were me, if the name didn't offend me, your not telling me would - I say just rip off the band aid.

Calliopespa · 09/06/2025 20:23

Have you added names from your family and totally excluded them?

Eenameenadeeka · 10/06/2025 05:54

What makes you think they will be upset by the name?

Koazy · 10/06/2025 06:48

Don’t do it. They’ll find out. Just be upfront

aquadog · 14/06/2025 19:50

Probably wouldn't keep it a secret and wouldn't even consider the offence. For us, all females have the same middle name in my maternal family so daughter has that (same as mine), and son has a family name from his father's side. I never even considered offence the first time our daughter was born. Just tell them.

bbear29 · 03/07/2025 18:00

We made a rule to not include any family names for our boy. My dad left when I was small so wouldn't use his name. My OH has both dad and stepdad so couldn't choose between of those. Too many names across grandparents to consider just one. Plus I didn't like any of the family names so that rule helped with that Grin

Ribecx · 07/07/2025 07:47

If it's worrying you this much then you probably shouldn't use the name.

Your child's name should not be a secret.

Ribecx · 07/07/2025 07:48

Eenameenadeeka · 10/06/2025 05:54

What makes you think they will be upset by the name?

Presumably it's because it is the name of a relative and other relatives will be upset/ jealous.

Are you having a christening?
