Name change cons

Hello mummies,

Has anyone here ever changed their baby’s first name? The registration office informed me that, since it’s within 12 months of birth, we can use space 17 on the birth certificate to make the change. After that, we can update the passport.

Has anyone done this before? Are there any issues that might come up in the future—particularly with travel or legal documents?

I’d really appreciate hearing about any similar experiences!

Just saw that you have had any responses to this. While I haven’t done this personally, there are quite a few threads of others changing their babies names before 12 months, so those may help you if you search.

Afaik the new amended birth certificate will show her “old” name too - so there shouldn’t be any issues applying for a new passport etc, as you’d just send in the new certificate showing the name change. And most other things when she’s older will often use a passport (or driving license once an adult etc) as proof, and those will only have her “new” name on. I really can’t see it causing any issues -but you’ll have the BC showing both names as proof in the very unlikely event it does.

My son is only 3 years old so there hasn't been any issues yet. However, I don't think there will be. This was a big part of why we decided to go ahead with the change - like you, I wanted to make sure it wouldn't cause any issues for my son, as afterall, it wasn't his choice. As far as I have been able to find out, as PP says, it's a change of their birth certificate, so anything that requires their birth certificate, will show their old name and current one. It's not like a deed poll name change, where they'd need to declare a previous name with some things. Usually with those sorts of things, they've had a name change much later in life, so they will have many records against their old name. In the case of a birth certificate name change, there is very little that has been recorded under their old name. And it also becomes their legal birth name.

Hello, we changed our daughters name at 3months. I went into the registry office & filled the form in person. The new birth certificate is then posted back to you within 3weeks. It was a simple process using the ‘Space 17’ form.
We haven’t had any issues so far but she doesn’t have a passport yet, the only other place was at the dr’s surgery who just needed to see the new birth certificate to change her name on the NHS system.
Best of luck with your decision 😊

Just wanted to chime in and say I changed my daughter’s name at around 8 weeks and there’s been no issues. She’s now three. You have to take in the old birth certificates and they replace them with new ones. Only difference is the new name is an amendment on the back. The original name will still be listed on the front but there’s been no issues applying for passports, it’s never questioned.

@BrandNewStart123 do you live in England? We changed our son's name (also 3) and his old name is at the top, his new name is at the bottom.

Hello,
Have you found the answers to these questions? I'd like to know them too :)

Sossita · 16/09/2025 20:55

I only have a few days left to change my daughter’s forename on her birth certificate, and I’m feeling unsure. I don’t really like her current name anymore, and I keep thinking about changing it—but I’m also worried about potential problems later on, especially since she already has a passport with the old name.

Has anyone gone through this before and can share their experience?
• If I change it, will the new name be considered her legal name from birth, or from the date of the change?
• Has anyone had issues with travel after updating the passport?

Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.

I have no idea if it counts if you change your babies name during this window.

i will just say that if she grows up to have certain deep background checks as part of her job, every name change adds to the complexity. No one really plans for that and the odds are slim, but you never know what kind of career she might choose.

That’s why I am so shattered. Especially her name is too strange here in the uk. Considering is this can affect her in everyday to day communication, career, …etc .
