Leah, Leyah, Leia?

I'm looking for the lay-ah pronunciation.

Leia is the most obvious option, but it seems too linked to Star Wars to use.
Leah is almost certainly going to get pronounced lee-ah 90% of the time in England.
Leyah works, but does it look too much like a 'tragedeigh' creative spelling?

Your thoughts? Any other options? I want this pronunciation specifically, not Leila, Lilah or other similar names.

Leía would at least be spelled right. Not Leah if you want Leía pronunciation.

Moreteaandchocolate · 06/06/2025 21:13

Leia is nice and I wouldn’t worry about the Star Wars connection as its becoming a more commonly used name and the association isn’t as strong as it was.

Leah will be Lee-ah. Leyah does look made up to me.

I'm looking for the lay-ah pronunciation.

Honestly as a teacher who has come across every spelling of the name and then some I would suggest you spell it Leia or Layah anything else is liable to get constantly mispronounced.

Moreteaandchocolate · 06/06/2025 21:16

Laya is another option maybe?

sprinklesandshines · 06/06/2025 21:17

Laya would be the way I’d spell it

feelingbleh · 06/06/2025 21:22

All your spellings will be pronounced Lee ah. For people to pronounce it properly it would be best being laya. Although I prefer the A infront of it and call her Aaliyah

BootballJoy · 06/06/2025 22:40

Leia is the one I'd choose. People will know how to pronounce it because of Star Wars but it's much more commonly used these days in real life so it wouldn't be odd at all.

Leeloo1233 · 07/06/2025 05:26

In most countries that is the pronounciation of Lea

BoleynMemories13 · 07/06/2025 07:01

Leah will definitely be pronounced Lee-ah all the time, and Layah looks dreadful and will be mistaken visually for Layla.

People are familiar with Leia being Lay-ah, from Star Wars. You won't escape the Star Wars connection, even if you spell it differently. When said aloud, it's still the same name. That's like saying we want to use Kylee so our child isn't associated with Kylie Minouge. Or we're spelling it Tayla so it's different to Taylor Swift. Audible, they're the same, so people will still think of Princes Leia and Star Wars when they hear it, however you spell it. So you may as well go with the spelling everyone is familiar with, to make her life easier.

I'm not a fan, personally, but many think Star Wars is cool. It's hardly a bad association is it?

Go with Leia.

hardliquormixedwithabitofintellect · 07/06/2025 07:04

How about Leya?

AnneMarieW · 07/06/2025 10:36

If you want that pronunciation you’ll have to go for the well known Leia spelling - and she’ll have to learn to ignore the Star Wars comments (unless the name becomes a well used classic like Luke).

Any other spelling is going to either get mispronounced or she is going to have a lifetime of spelling out her name on top of the Star Wars comments. I wouldn’t give her that double whammy.

Leia is a very pretty name though, I can see why you like it - and there’s always kids about that have names linked with popular film/tv characters (I’ve met a Maverick and a Thor with no Scandi heritage for example and they seem to cope okay as there’s so many weird and wonderful names in the classroom now compared to 30 years ago).

Frostynoman · 07/06/2025 10:38

Genuinely reading your thread to help but then it popped into my head, at secondary school I’d be concerned that the kids would use the taunt ‘lay her’ and various things around that aspect

BeautifulPeopleGo · 07/06/2025 13:41

Leia.

TheBirdintheCave · 07/06/2025 13:45

I’d go with Leia. I actually know a little girl with that spelling who’s dad is named one of the other Star Wars characters names 😅

Largestlegocollectionever · 07/06/2025 13:46

I’d go for Leia but phonetically in English language ei is an eeee sound so whilst most people know the name, if they don’t it’ll still get mispronounced - there’s also so many various pronunciations of all the L names people get easily confused!

user1492757084 · 09/06/2025 13:57

Go with Leia. The Star Wars connection is an advantage in that people will spell and say the name correctly.

ChandrilanDiscoDroid · 09/06/2025 13:58

Leyah is awful and will indeed come off as tragically youneek. If you really want it pronounced Lay-ah, go with the Star Wars spelling like people say.

100% agree

KayEmAy · 09/06/2025 15:27

Love the name Leia and that spelling, I say go with the obvious pronunciation :)

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 10/06/2025 18:37

Laia. Layah.

JollyGreenSnake · 10/06/2025 21:46

Laya is an insurance company in Ireland

Laralee · 10/06/2025 21:59

Leia definitely. Lovely name and spelt and pronounced as expected by most people.
