I really like the name Sydney for a little boy.
What do people think? I don’t know any little ones with the name.
Do you think people would think it was a girls name because of the spelling? I’m not fussed on the Sidney spelling.

I would assume Sydney was female as I think of Sydney Sweeney.

NewBinBag · 06/06/2025 00:09

I know of two Sidney's. It's a bit harsh to my ear, I prefer Stanley as a similar old man type name.

Sorry but I do associate the y spelling with girls.

JDM625 · 06/06/2025 00:13

I too thought Sydney was female and Sidney (Sid) was male.
I realise you didn't ask, but Cindy sounds very similar.

Timeforyetanothernamechange · 06/06/2025 00:30

I'd assume your spelling is for a girl but Sidney for a boy.

mathanxiety · 06/06/2025 02:14

All the Sydneys I know are girls/ women.

Sidney is the male version.

mrssunshinexxx · 06/06/2025 02:52

I love Sydney for a boy it was second on our list

StampOnTheGround · 06/06/2025 04:30

For a boy it’s Sidney, everyone would assume he was a girl if you went with Sydney!

I don’t like the name at all, but if you do, that’s all that
matters!

AllPlayedOut · 06/06/2025 06:40

It’s awful. It’s such an unattractive name and there’s something somewhat comedic about it. And yes Sydney is the feminine spelling.

Moreteaandchocolate · 06/06/2025 06:54

I also assume Sydney is female and Sidney male. It could grow on me if I met a little Sidney - it’s from the right era to make a comeback, like Stanley has.

BoleynMemories13 · 06/06/2025 06:58

Sydney would definitely be assumed female.

Sidney is the male version.

Philandbill · 06/06/2025 07:00

Sidney is the usual male spelling and Sydney for a girl. I know a feisty female teenage Sydney and 25 years ago taught a little boy called Sidney. He was fabulous and a real character, shown by the fact that I still clearly remember him 😀I really like the name and due to the ones I know see it as strong.

Headingtowardsdivorce · 06/06/2025 07:01

Sydney is female, Sidney is male. I quite like Sid.

HolidayBrochure · 06/06/2025 07:02

I’d assumed you’d named her after Sydney Sweeney which I’d find a bit naff. I don’t like celeb inspired names which I realise is a bit irrational.

TheSalmonMousse · 06/06/2025 07:02

No. I'd assume it was a girl and they have some sort of connection to the actual place.

Sidney is fine.

PersephoneParlormaid · 06/06/2025 07:02

I prefer Stan and Stanley. And I agree that Sydney is a female spelling.

dontcomeatme · 06/06/2025 07:03

I was coming on this thread to say Sydney is a beautiful girls name 😕 definitely never thought boy when I read the title x

Razzmatazzle · 06/06/2025 07:12

Only met one Sydney IRL, a classmate from long ago and yes, this Sydney was a girl.

user1492757084 · 06/06/2025 11:19

Sidney is a very handsome name.
Think Sidney Poitier, a beautiful character in To Sir With Love.

DeSoleil · 06/06/2025 11:27

Sidney after the great Sid James would be great.

Sydney for a boy is awful.

HugoYorway · 06/06/2025 20:23

I thought it would be for a girl too.

sheknowsitstoolate · 06/06/2025 20:24

I nearly called our baby Sidney

ThatBeverleyMacca · 07/06/2025 09:25

My grandad and great-grandad (born late 1800s and early 1900s) were both Sydney, spelt with a y as the second letter. I haven't come across that spelling for males anywhere else though, and would go with Sidney for a boy as I think most would assume Sydney to be a girl nowadays.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 07/06/2025 10:45

I would spell it Sidney because otherwise it’ll get misspelt and people will think he’s female on paper

Other than that it’s nice - similar retro feel as Stanley and Albert etc
