It was very hopeful to hear the opinions on the slavic names. Now I have two more in my mind but something doesn’t feel right about them, although I like how Conrad fits with the last name which starts with Ca… and has a soft feeling… is it too outdated? And what could be a nickname for that? Thank you

They are both lovely names. Mark is one of my favourites.

17caterpillars1mouse · 05/06/2025 21:07

I know a young Conrad, lovely young boy, cheeky smile, bright and charismatic (he's 6)

I'm not a fan of Mark (went to school with a few in the 90s / 00s) so seems a bit dated. I do adore Marcus though, such a handsome name and seems more on trend (maybe as it has a similar sound to Lucas)

AnneMarieW · 05/06/2025 21:09

Don’t know any young Conrad’s- but I do know a young Mark (late teens). His name was chosen precisely because it is quite international/ the same in many languages (he is mixed British/East Asian). As far as I know he likes his name and has never had any issues with it.

I personally consider Mark a classic name rather than dated- very similar to Matthew, Luke and John (the other Gospels) in that there are always a few about of different ages even if the names rise and fall in fashion.

Conrad is less my personal taste, but I can’t see anything wrong with it (no obvious teasing, spelling or pronunciation issues etc). And I love alliterative names as I think they are very memorable, so I can see why you’re tempted!

I teach a lovely (and very cool!) kid called Mark. I like it.

ASuitableName · 05/06/2025 21:14

I’ve never met a Conrad in real life, but have encountered a few in books over the years. I like it because it’s a strong, masculine name which is known but not commonly used.
I have met many Marks and have never encountered an unpleasant one, so this is very subjective! Marcus is less common.

stealthbanana · 05/06/2025 21:19

I have a (young) mark and he is the only one in his whole primary school! It suits him, it’s a strong classic name. But it’s definitely not a fashionable name - I imagine most of our parent peers think it’s awful but 🤷🏼‍♀️.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/06/2025 21:21

Very 70s baby names.

Therunecaster · 05/06/2025 21:21

Mark is a lovely name.

What could be the lovely nicknames for Conrad?

Mark is lovely, classic & understated. But then I like John, David & Peter. Lovely names. Conrad is a bit try hard. It's also got con in it so it sounds like a dodgy geezer's name, to me.

There isn’t any really as Connie is too feminine and Con isn’t nice. Conrad is likely a nickname- free name just like Mark - unless you go down the initials route like “CJ” (Conrad Joseph for example).

User1786 · 05/06/2025 22:37

Absolutely nothing wrong with Mark, a nit dull perhaps but a good, classic biblical name. Conrad is just awful

Mine is known as Roo in the immediate family. As we used to call him Conradskiroo got shorteend to Roo or Rooboy.

In outer circles he has never had a nm it was one of my draws to the name as I am not fond of shortenings. (Unusual where I grew up)

BoleynMemories13 · 06/06/2025 07:04

They're totally different styles, to me.

In England, Mark would be viewed as a biblical classic. Quite dated now but still a few young ones about (mainly Eastern European in my experience). It's a popular name here which everyone is familiar with, although most in this country are in their 30s-60s as that's when it was at it's height of popularity.

I don't think Conrad has ever been popular here. I'm really not keen. It's quite a harsh sound. I really can't imagine a baby Conrad. I guess the obvious short form would be Con, same as Connor, but I'm still not keen.

BootballJoy · 06/06/2025 08:55

Not a fan of Mark at all. Just a really harsh sound to me. I do like some dated names -Timothy, Anthony, Jonathan etc but never liked Mark.
Conrad is an interesting name, think it's quite good actually. Something international and suave about it.

Con

Mark is a really solid good name.
Like David, Peter and Richard.

Conrad is unusual and seems not as friendly.
I'm not fond of Con nor Constantine either.

PizzaSophiaLoren · 06/06/2025 11:35

I love Marc, but not so much Conrad.

TheyreLikeUsButRichAndThin · 06/06/2025 11:37

My 10 year old has a friend called Mark (yes he’s Slavic). It’s just his name, no thoughts really, once you hear it more than a couple of times it’s just a name. I also know a young David, Derek and 2 young Desmonds.

Conrad is pretty cool. Conrad Carter for example - v cool.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 06/06/2025 11:48

Mark big fat no, my exh name born 1959.
Conrad sounds harsh to me
How about Conall? Similar sound but softer

KayEmAy · 06/06/2025 16:43

Mark sounds a little dated but more boring for lack of a better word (apologies to all Marks)

I do really like Conrad! Still cool to me.

SWsmileyface · 06/06/2025 16:51

I knew one Conrad, he was Polish.
I've known a lot of Marks.
I quite like both names but Mark is my favourite. It is quite unusual a boy these days which I think is a good - there won't be a lot of little Marks in class!

Rinkali · 06/06/2025 16:54

I like Mark - it’s simple and unfussy. The only Conrad I’ve ever met was an acquaintance of my great-aunt, and he was known as Connie, which he carried off, on account of being a posh old solicitor.

FlightCommanderPRJohnson · 06/06/2025 16:55

I would go with Marcus rather than Mark. He can shorten it to Marc if he doesn't like it once he is old enough to have an opinion. Not a fan of Conrad.

WaltzingWaters · 06/06/2025 17:02

I like Conrad, and not sure I’ve ever actually met one. I probably have at some point in my 35 years, but not a very used name, so it doesn’t actually sound dated to me.
Mark on the other hand sounds dated, very overused, and rather dull. Marcus is better.
