Iona - feedback from those who have the name or know someone with it

Hi,

We are seriously considering the name Iona for a baby girl, but have two potential concerns that I would love feedback on, especially from people with the name, or who know people with the name (especially if you used it for your daughter!).

  1. Are there a lot of pronunciation issues, and if so how bad / annoying are these? We would pronounce it the Scottish way (eye-own-a). My guess is that there wouldn’t be that many pronunciation issues in the UK but that there might be abroad. Is that the case and if so, how big an issue have you found that to be?
  2. Even though it is short in terms of number of letters, it feels like it might be a bit of a mouthful to always use the full name. Have you found this and if so, what nicknames have you used? We like “Io” but it seems more appropriate for a teenager or adult than a baby and I’m struggling to think of any reasonable alternatives

Any general feedback on the name, especially on whether you like it and any other things worth considering also very welcome!!

For a bit more context, we have Scottish family so it feels appropriate for us to use it, and it works with our surname (i.e. our surname isn’t a noun). We are also aware that the name is pronounced differently in Wales.

Thanks so much for any inputs

Retired Scottish secondary school teacher here. Caution advised.

I recall some of my little cherubs giggling over the supposed fact that they'd had a schoolmate at primary whose surname was Dick. [Yes, she was an Iona.]

ETA I do think that it's a beautiful name, but kids can be horrible.

Cruise ship name!

Talipesmum · 04/06/2025 14:41

I’ve got a teen cousin with the name. It’s a really lovely name, everyone pronounces it the way you’ve said (I’m not sure how else it would be pronounced? Not heard any other variants). It doesn’t seem long to say. Can’t answer all your questions but just to say it’s a lovely name.

Crispyturtle · 04/06/2025 14:44

I’ve got a relative with the name, never heard anyone struggle with pronunciation and never heard anyone make any unkind comments. I think it’s a beautiful name and we seriously considered it for our daughter, we only discounted it because of said family member with the same name.

SlenderRations · 04/06/2025 14:45

Can't think how else one would pronounce it. Lovely name. Doesn't really feel like it's whole three syllables in the mouth, iyswim. Go for it.

Acc0untant · 04/06/2025 14:46

I also just think of the cruise ship, sorry

BlueyNeedsToFuckOff · 04/06/2025 14:46

It’s a lovely name and I’ve never heard it pronounced in any other way.

I wouldn’t shorten to Io; that to me would have more pronunciation issues even though it only has 2 letters! Three syllables really isn’t too long for a name.

skinnyoptionsonly · 04/06/2025 14:48

Lovely underused name. I went to school with an Iona many years ago 😊

abnerbrownsdressinggown · 04/06/2025 14:48

Lovely name - I knew an Iona at university and I don’t recall anyone ever struggling with the pronunciation.

BangaloreLulu · 04/06/2025 14:48

I had a friend at school called Iona and don't recall any pronunciation issues at all. Her shortened name was Nonnie.

JellyAnd · 04/06/2025 14:48

I know one. American. No pronunciation issues AFAIK. Doesn’t get abbreviated (yet, child is still too young to come up with their own nickname). Might sound silly if your surname is a noun e.g. ‘I own a wood’ but otherwise I think it’s a lovely name.

Emanwenym · 04/06/2025 14:51

In the UK: Eye-OWN-a (Scottish), YONN-ah (Welsh, dated, linked with January)

No need for a 'nn', but Ion (Yonn) in Wales.

Downside: watch how it goes with the surname, and no amount of middle names will help.

I prefer Fiona.

Acunningruse · 04/06/2025 14:53

Just makes me think of the cruise ship, sorry! But obviously that won’t be around forever.

Tooearlytothink · 04/06/2025 14:55

I have a friend with the name & think it’s lovely. We are Scottish though so it’s very fitting. She doesn’t shorten it. Cruise ship reference means nothing to me, for what it’s worth.

NCjusttosaythat · 04/06/2025 14:56

We named our daughter this, I always loved it. No issues with pronunciation even though there is an alternative in the native language where we live. Her nicknames are a bit random thanks to her siblings but generally she is Yoyo, Ionicus(!), or Yonzee

chattyness · 04/06/2025 15:02

It's quite common here, I've never heard it pronounced the wrong way. I think it's very pretty in full as Iona , but shortened to Io it sounds very odd to me

GoBackToTheStart · 04/06/2025 15:07

Beautiful (because your surname isn’t a noun. Absolute nightmare if it is!) and the ones I know haven’t had any issues with the Scottish pronunciation (although my Welsh colleague living in England has issues all of the time as people tend to default to the Scottish IME).

Some occasional instances of “eye-on-a” (rather than “own” in the middle) from non-Brits but it’s more an accent thing that would happen with most British names anyway, rather than a “getting it wrong” issue.

One (Scottish) Iona I know got Yoyo as a child - realistically a nn will develop that may or may not have any relation to her name, and at school her friends will find their own shortening so don’t let it put you off if you can’t think of one immediately.

No idea about the cruise ship so that wouldn’t bother me either.

Babanynamehelp2025 · 04/06/2025 15:59

Thank you so much to all the replies so far, amazing to get so much feedback so quickly! Also great to hear that generally people think the pronunciation is straightforward and that the 3 syllables don´t make it too long for daily use.

On our surname, I can confirm it is not Dick (😂😅) and we´ve sense checked that there are no immediately obvious issues with the combination (i.e. it is also not Hunt, because I could also see that Iona Hunt could be problematic!). Of course, children are creative so who knows what they will come up with and I´m sure they´ll find something!

TBH I´d never heard of the cruise ship before considering the name, but that´s not a big concern for us and it´s great to hear that most others don´t think it is either, though appreciate it is the most immediate reference for some.

Would love as much feedback as possible, so please keep it coming!

I think it’s a lovely name. The one I know goes by Non.

flightless55 · 04/06/2025 16:31

My name!

Only 2 issues I've ever encountered ..

People on emails calling me Lona ... (just makes me laugh)

And had to be careful if I wanted to marry and change my surname ...

"I .. own .. a "...... bell/ cheeseman/ Ball (etc)

But get a lot of compliments too :)

greenismyfavorite · 04/06/2025 16:34

Unfortunately Iona is the name of the bully in my child’s year at school. So that’s put me off the name entirely. A shame as it is a nice name but I now associate it with a very vindictive little girl.

I know of two instances where people were caught out when they married.

My uni flatmate had the surname of Legg. Her uncle married a girl called Shona.

Several girls in my class at high school had Slavic forenames and surnames. I had a Scottish forename and Slavic surname.

As a result, I once had several girls chanting 'half caste' at me. Inexplicably, one of the other girls with a Slavic name joined in.

Reader, there is a God. Her forename was Tamara. She is now Mrs Knight.

rainbow90x · 04/06/2025 16:37

There is an Iona in my daughters class. Think it is getting more popular!
But also makes me think of the cruise ship 🙈

Nannyfannybanny · 04/06/2025 16:38

We had a house called this. Have been to Iona greek island. How can Nonnie be a shorter version it's longer.. unfortunately for me,my DD had a friend yes Scottish called Iona, but she was a dreadful thief both shoplifting and friends houses.

NewsdeskJC · 04/06/2025 16:40

I've known 2 Ionas, both lovely
