Sibling names for Benjamin

Ineedadviceonnames · 02/06/2025 21:31

My DS is called Benjamin and while I love his name, I feel like if I pick another traditional name they might end up sounding old fashioned together, if that makes any sense!?

Our favourite girl's name is Sophie but I feel like Ben and Sophie sound a bit 90s together, or am I overthinking? Also love Phoebe, Ivy, Maddie, Amelie, Francesca (Frankie).

Our favourite boy's name is Luca (Luc), but we also like Louis, Reuben and Elliott.

Would love some honest opinions about choosing timeless names that also sound current!

I like Ben and Sophie actually! I see what you mean though. I'd probably go for something long that can be shortened (just like Ben), like Elizabeth (Eliza, Lizzy). Madeleine etc. Frederick (Freddie), Thomas for boys.

Mumofgirls2017 · 02/06/2025 21:50

Like Louis and Elliott with Benjamin. Sophie goes great and still v current. As does Phoebe and Francesca

I have always really liked Libby too, just not a huge fan of Elizabeth. Likewise with Penny/ Penelope.

Sophie is nice and goes well with Ben imo - you’re overthinking 😊

All of your girls names are good, except you can’t have Frankie and Ben’s (restaurant chain!!).

I would pick Phoebe from your choices as it sounds modern yet traditional.

I adore Ivy but I’m a bit put off by it’s popularity and the number of similar names (Evie / Ava / Eve etc) around atm (might not bother you?)

The two young Bens I know have sisters called Rosie and Jess, which I really like.

Luca (Luc) is lovely if you don’t mind popularity (I actually love Luke - it feels solid and less trendy than Luca to me)

Louis is also lovely.

Reuben I wouldn’t use with Ben as one of the Reubens I know goes by Ben!

Elliott is quite nice.

Thomas

Harry
Joseph (Joe / Joey)

Sophie and Ben is a lovely, timeless combination. Sophie is one of my favourite names ever, so pretty!

paranoiaofpufflings · 02/06/2025 21:59

You’re overthinking. Traditional names don’t ever sound old fashioned, and definitely don’t sound 90s.

Benjamin and Sophie sound perfect together. That would be my favourite combination of your girls names, followed by Phoebe as second choice.

From your boys names, I think Benjamin and Reuben are too matchy, with both having Ben in the name! Luca - I prefer Lucas. Louis and Elliott both good choices.

Kirbert2 · 02/06/2025 22:04

We have very similar tastes! My son is also called Benjamin and a girl would've been called Phoebe.

My other son is called Samuel. Other boy names we considered were Oliver, James, Jacob, Joseph, Thomas, Alexander & Ethan.

Other girl names we considered than Phoebe were Isabella, Madeleine (Maddie), Emily & Grace.

I really like classic names and don't think classic names sound too old fashioned with each other. I really like Ben & Sophie together and Ben & Elliot from your options.

CurlySueAndBillToo · 02/06/2025 22:06

The Ben’s I know have sisters called Isabelle and Ella and one with a brother called Joseph.
Sophie is still quite popular and sounds nice with Ben.

Gundogday · 02/06/2025 22:08

I think you’re over thinking it as well, and surely most people don’t go around thinking ‘“ Mr and Mrs Ineed have chosen such 90s names…!”.

Someone commented on a friend's children's names once and it always stayed with me!

I was going to say Pepper/Pippa for a girl.

All your suggestions are lovely.

I know young siblings called Ben(jamin) and Phoebe, I think their names go well together

Ben and Sophie - great names. Sensible and timeless.

Charlotte and Olivia were also briefly discussed for us. 😂

Sounds like you can't go wrong!

No such thing as too “old-fashioned” imo - if by that you mean just classic like Benjamin. Classic means it’s less likely to date which can be a real bonus - personally I’d give DC2 that benefit as well rather than trying to choose something trendier just for contrast.

Sophie works really well - it’s still almost Top 50 popular but it’s been well used for so long that everyone knows middle aged or older ones too (just like with Benjamin). Your other boys and girls choices imo are mostly much trendier and might risk sounding very 2000’s instead in future (Phoebe and Louis perhaps not quite as trendy, just not my personal taste 🤣).

The Benjamin’s I know mostly have brothers- one called Jacob, one Joseph, another Thomas. I’d also suggest classic names like Samuel, Daniel, Henry, Edward, William etc work well.

One Benjamin I know has a sister called Jasmine (similar ending sounds and popularity level I guess). But other than Sophie, classic names like Emily, Charlotte, Hannah/Anna, Emma, Eleanor etc sound good to me.

Piers. Jane. Giles. Christopher. Ian. Grace. Max. Isaac. Alice. Lucy. James. Edward. William. Matilda. Charlie. Bryher. Fergus. Sian. Samuel. Jude. Ethan. Megan. Francesca. Dylan. Samuel. Nathan. Eleanor. Karl.

I probably should have used the word 'current' instead of 'old fashioned', for example, calling a baby Karen or Gary in 2025 wouldn't really fit but there are some old names that stick around as you said.

I like names that aren't over used and also aren't shocking. As you said, timeless names that don't date I think are perfect 😊.
