We are due our little boy this month - and finding the prospect of naming a tiny human a bit daunting!

At the moment, our top contenders are:

  1. Louie (my favourite)
  2. Harry
  3. Jack (husband’s favourite)

Looking for some more inspiration please, I find boys names super hard. Prefer more traditional or classic names 😊

I like Louis spelt this way. Harry and jack are nice too.

EcruCardigan · 01/06/2025 12:21

Louie - I don't like that spelling. Louis is the classic spelling
Harry - Classic, but it's been very popular for decades. Babies called Harry in England & Wales since 1996
Jack - Classic, but it's been very popular for decades. Babies called Jack in England & Wales since 1996

I like Harry a lot. Jack is very dull. Louie is ok, agree with others and much prefer Louis.

What about:
Arthur, Noah, Jude, Jonah, Christopher nn Kit, Oscar

Pinty · 01/06/2025 13:47

They are all nice names but as others have said if you use Louis spell it the traditional way.

ToadRage · 01/06/2025 13:54

Jack is far too common or me like others i prefer the spelling 'Louis' but you run the risk of people pronouncing it 'Lewis'. Never liked Harry but i love Henry which is my brothers name.

RosesAndHellebores · 01/06/2025 13:57

Louis will get mispronounced Lou-is!

Louie has become the more popular spelling in the UK to avoid this.

I don’t like Jack - it was THE most popular name some yeas ago and we k ow SOO MANY

RosesAndHellebores · 01/06/2025 20:50

@Corallie if that happens in your circle then Lewis would be the better name. Louis is pronounced Louie, the s is silent, as in vous and nous.

Constantlyworried1 · 01/06/2025 20:57

Harrison

Harley
Teddy

Sorry to be blunt but Louie is only traditional if you are naming a duck - for a child’s name it’s a newly trendy spelling, the traditional one for boys/men is Louis (like all those French Kings). There are enough Louis about that most people will assume the “Lou-ee” pronunciation unless told otherwise in my experience. Lewis has different origins from the Scottish Island/surname.

Personally I prefer the sound of Jack best but nothing wrong with Louis or Harry.

Other ideas based on Louis, Jack and Harry - maybe Max or Toby in terms of style. In terms of very classic names - William, Thomas, George, James, David, Joseph, Alexander, Michael, Daniel, Edward are all boys names that have never left the English Top 100 (and until recently Charles too) if that helps.

Louis is handsome spelt the correct way.

Jack and Harry are both great choices too.

BloomingSunflower · 04/06/2025 16:22

Thanks everyone for your suggestions 😊

The reason we were looking at Louie rather than Louis is to avoid mispronunciation. I went to school with a Louis (Lew-is), don’t want him to have to go through life pronouncing his name for people like he did. I personally like both but this is the main reason with the e at the end.

I have always loved the name George but for lots of reasons we have taken this off our list. However - I will sit down with my husband and go through them all with him.

Just to note - his middle name will most likely be Thomas.

I love Henry too but I have a cousin called Henry. In fact, a lot of the names I really like have already been used by family members, like Max, Isaac, Oscar and William.
